Sounds like a case of nice buyer meets nice seller.... very rare!

Off topic but is the Touran a decent car and can the seats come out the back so it can be used like van as per other MPVs?
Ex wife has a '58 reg 2.0tdi sport. It's ace! You don't get the emasculated feeling you get in other mpv's. Great build quality, handling, spec. I'd advise anyone to have one.
And the seats all plug out.

I live IN Coventry - and whilst it has it's share of cretins (but then where in the UK doesn't?!), there are some of us here who can conduct ourselves correctly in private car sale & purchasing negotiations smile

That said - my last few car sales have been to dealers / traders as I didn't want to risk dealing with the nut jobs out there. But I have sold several cars privately and aside from some mild time wasting, never had any real problems!

Best guy was a chap who showed up to buy my MK4 Golf TDI. I advertised it at a fair price and with details of any issues it had. He shows up, we have a test drive. He likes the car, makes a fair offer which I accept. He then says "Right. Now you have the money - are there any other problems I need to know about?" - I say nope, other than it has developed an extremely slow puncture on one tyre very recently - seems to need topping up every few weeks. He says fair enough, hands over the cash and he's on his way. Not before pointing out he's in the armed forces, he knows where I live, and if the car is hiding some terrible fault he'll be back to seek a refund! I said I had nothing to hide - it was a good car. And he was off on his way. Never heard from him again.

You had someone threaten you whilst you were selling him the car?! I'd have told him the sale is off unless he's happy with it. No one should physically threaten you like that.

Guess he doesn't know you, and could have been un-knowingly sold a car with serious problems. Still, what a **** (fill your own insult in!).

I had a similar thing happen to me recently.

I was selling 3 old company iPhones as a job lot on a local 'for sale and wanted' page on Facebook as I just wanted cash on collection and couldn't be arsed with eBay in the slightest.

I had some guy turn up at my house, and he was clearly a BNP/National Front skinhead type guy, and although he was quite civil and polite, he pretty much told me straight that if he got home and found that the phones were blocked, or locked to one network or anything like that he WOULD be coming straight back round and getting his money back.

Hard to know what you can do to weed out this sort of buyer before they turn up on the doorstep.

My last sale was a classic mini, all very pleasant and even got a photo of the newly restored car a few months later.

This is my selling privately story so far (from Ebay), all within the space of a few hours:

Buyer: Hi is there any dents or scratches on tank or paintwork cheers

Me: Hi, There is no dents in the tank, a couple of very light surface scratches that're barely noticeable in the tank,There is the odd body work scratch here & there, nothing less than you'd expect from a 16 year old bike.

Buyer: Have you got the other exhaust cheerd

Me: Yes i have the original exhausts. (Admittedly i should of just said no).

Buyer: Does everything come with the bike

Me:Hi yes all the bits come with the bike, I no longer use it & need the money for a house deposit so I need to get as much as possible, what would be your best offer.

Buyer: Hi I'm very interested what is your rock bottom price you will take as I'm 350 mile away

Me: Afternoon,Sorry i haven't been able to reply, i have been with customers, £2500 isn't a high enough offer for me to be able to accept, i'm hoping to get closer to the asking price.

Buyer: About 2500

Buyer: Is it any good as I live at scarborough

At this point, i had 2 voicemails from the person & 2 missed calls.

Buyer: Can you answer please

Buyer: Can you send me some pictures of the scratches and scuffs and can I have post code so I can see how much it would cost to gat collected cheers

Me: I've tried to photograph the scratches but as they're so light the camera doesn't pick them up, postcode is XYZ. You'd be best off inspecting the bike to make sure you're happy with it's condition, it is honestly described.

Buyer: Iv just had a quote 288 to get it picked up so what is your rock bottom price cheers

Buyer: Make it XYZ and you have a deal then it will have cost me XYZ

Me: You've offered £XYZ, I said it wasn't enough, ask price is £XYZ.

Me: I'll meet in the middle at £XYZ. That's the lowest I'm willing to go.

Buyer: I could have paid money by paypal or straight in your account but I can't give anymore than XYZ sorry

Me: Sorry £XYZ is my lowest price. I was only going to knock of £100 & I've come down another £XYZ.Payment in full will be needed before the bike goes anywhere in the form of cash or cleared funds in my bank account. Ok no problem, thanks for the interest.

Buyer: No problem I hope you get your price my problem is I have 7 bikes I sold XYZ and then bought a blade but I miss my XYZ but I can only give what I have left anyway best of luck
Will you take XYZ

Me: I'll take £XYZ & keep the standard exhausts, as they're in my friends loft & i don't see them much. Which is why they were not included in the listing.

Buyer: I asked before about the exhausts and you said I would get everything if I have to buy new ones I might as well have give you the price you asked.

Me: Why would you have to buy new ones? There's a brand new set on there that've done less than 100miles, I was throwing the standards in as a good will gesture even though they weren't in the original listing.
I've also knocked £XYZ off of the asking price for you.

Me: You either buy it or you don't, It's as simple as that really, I'm not going to lose any sleep as I've had numerous emails & calls about it this evening.Until someone either pays or leaves a deposit the bikes still for sale.

Buyer: Are you giving me the standard ones as well I like my bikes to be standard

Buyer: If I'm getting standard ones as well ill have it do you want me to pay the full amount with paypal

Buyer: If your friend won't give you exhaust s get police she can't keep them as they belong to you

He's back!

Buyer: Do you have exhausts back yet.

Me: No & i've decided not to include them in the original listing as it's proving problematic getting them back, hence why they are not listed as part of the deal. If this is a deal breaker for you, then so be it.

I was dreading selling mine, but before I advertised it someone approached me asking if I'd be interesting in selling it. Thankfully it all went through easy enough and I got a fair price for it after negotiating a little. Apparently he's the local village pot dealer, but seemed a nice enough bloke...

A few years ago I was selling my Clio 172 and after a few weeks with not a lot of interest, I had a chap call around 10pm at night asking if he could come and look at it then (after a 90min drive from Manchester). He was a bit taken aback when I said no and he'd be better coming in the daylight so he could have a good look around! He eventually turned up a few days later with 4 brothers/uncles/cousins and bought it.

I`ve said in huge fking letters (in the biggest sise I could get away with) `Deposit taken` at the foot of my advert and I`m still getting donkeys asking what my `best price` is and just tonight I`ve been offered £10k cash. (£3k less than asking) . As if it would be a change from being paid in bananas or magic beans.

Why leave the advert up if you don't want people to contact you? Incredibly annoying to see all those adds on ebay that are "SOLD" or "DEPOSIT TAKEN"... there is a strong temptation just to email them to be annoying. If the car is sold just fk off and stop clogging up my search results.

+1.

When selling recently I got loads of £XXXX cash emails, all about 25% off the asking price. I had a couple of guys turn up and waste an hour of my time then say "my budget is £XXXX, again 20% below asking. I tell them to sod off.

I finally sold it to a fella who tried haggling by saying he will want a new key for it (second key). Not really my problem, I didn't advertise it with 2 keys, so why expect me to pay for it. It's not my fault you're forever loosing them!

Having said that, I've lost small fortunes traiding in cars for a easy swap. So, I'd rather put up with a little crap to make that extra bit of money.

So in other words you want to have your cake and eat it too, clearly I hadn't realized that, thanks for explaining. rolleyes And you are calling me a wker......

Have you considered that taking a DEPOSIT is supposed to secure the car for the buyer and also protect the seller in case of having to pay to re-advertise the car? It is not supposed to allow you to keep advertising the car (in the hope of getting a higher offer) while simultaneously allowing you to moan at people daring to contact you offering less.

The deposit taken thing makes sense, my E92 saga continues, I took a deposit in good faith on Sunday & took the car off Auto Trader, earlier this week the buyer emails to say his stolen car has been recovered & therefore he wont be buying mine (wont get into why he was buying a new car before he was in a position to...). Because I'd pulled the AT advert I've had to pay for a new one (well the buyer who messed me around has as it's coming out of the deposit he left), if I'd changed the wording & not pulled the advert until it was fully paid for & taken away then I could have just changed the wording back.

Well, someone has bought it, and to be honest I thought they were another time waster - sent me a text message (along with 2 others today offering 7k on a 9k car), anyhow he turned up with his dad when he said he said he would, quick test drive, made a sensible offer, cash paid & car gone. I think I'm probably about 800 up over WBAC & while selling it privately was a bit tedious it was worth it.

Selling a cars a nightmare nowadays, one of the reasons I now lease.

Last car I attempted to sell private was a 2yr old e90 bmw, had it advertised cheapest on autotrader and still got a load of idiots texting offering 12k, then getting angry when I said no.
Justifying me taking 12k as they had to take less when they sold their car. Eh I think you'll find I can decide what's cars worth
Without your bullst reasoning!! Sold it in the end to a car buying website for around 400 quid less than I was asking.
