This is a common theme on t'web...try getting the special visa thingy for visiting the USA - you get loads of results offering the standard service but at a premium. Even the official site doesn't look all that.

It shouldn't surprise you that people are taken in. People do things on auto-pilot and don't read everything they're presented with, especially when doing mundane jobs like renewing a driving license. You're busy, distracted, the kids are screaming, it didn't occur to you there would be a scam DVLA site. Scammers know this. It doesn't make it much of an ethical business, though, and we have to sympathise with OPs OH even if it's satisfying to point out the errors that other people make.

Not as a blanket result, no. It depends on your previous searches and any other factors. On my search for DVLA the whole first page is only .gov.uk sites. Essentially your search returns are (nearly) unique based on Google's history on you.

There was. The sites used to be much less clear about their non-DVLA status. so more scammier. HMG got a load of complaints about sites for DVLA, E111, passports and just about every govt site.I am sure there was something official done about these sites, recently. ISTR the result was the scammy ones were de-listed by Google and the rest made it clear their charges and status.
They are not scam sites,they provide a service for a fee that you can get for free elsewhere.
I got hooked when renewing our E111 cards,in a rush,click click click,send.Then you realise,hang on I`ve just paid for something that's free and feel very foolish. My nice new cards turned up in a few days.

There is a similar (but, not as far as I know, affiliated) organisation who will fill in your passport form, and they have decided to sue their customers who refused to pay believing they were misled. It may be worth keeping an eye open if you do choose to get a refund from your credit card company.
