Is there a fun, petrol car that will do a genuine 40mpg?

I assume OP means 40MPG on the combined cycle?
I can easily achieve over 40MPG on a run, but my average is more like 34-35MPG.

My VX220 does better than 40mpg on a normal day but the 32ltr tank means regular fuel stops are regular
Well, of course they are tongue out
Frequent! The fuel stops are frequent. They could be regular too, if you stop on a certain day every week but that's not what you meant.

Halley's comet is a regularly spotted object in the night sky. Every 76 years. It's not a frequently observed phenomenon though...

Sorry. Don't normally get picky about words but those two just get me, every time. I'll crawl back into my pedant-hole now.

An elise 111s, slightly better than the standard k series on fuel due to the VVC. Pretty much depreciation proof as well.

Don't bother with a silly little hatchback, you won't have as much fun at legal speeds than in an elise.

LOL

I was being a little silly with my wording, no need to crawl out of your pedant-hole for that one smile

I feel your pain though, there are some wording and grammar mistakes that get my goat too

Golf GTIs can do over 40 if you drive very, very carefully. Normally low to mid thirties.

I was not fully aware of the high oil consumption and engine failures. We were thinking of changing the wife's vRS 130PD for one.....but maybe not after reading this !!

The right car will also depreciate less than a more common hatchback.

My twingo gt meets the criteria funnily enough. I got 49.6mpg as a best figure. 40mpg is easy.

Bit of an unusual choice, but how about a Kia Ceed/Pro Ceed GT? Cracking motor, 1.6 turbo, 201bhp, 40mpg real world easily achievable, plus a 7 year warranty all for c£20k!

Suzuki swift sport. Old one I get 34-35mpg pure city driving and can get over 40 on a longer run easy enough.
Expect the new one to do better due to the 6th gear it has.

I managed pretty much 40 mpg this morning in my Mk3 Focus ST. I had a nice early run to Aberdeen from Perth, 90 miles. Filled up and reset the trip and thought I'd see what I could manage. I normally go cross country if I'm early and give it a good blast. Even then I'm hard pushed to get it below 27 mpg.

Convert pretty much any older car this side of a V12 Jaguar to LPG and you will get the cost equivalent of these figures on the combined cycle.
