Glickenhaus - Geneva 2015

Want to cause a stir at the Nurburgring this year? The SCG003 should do it!

'Race car for the road' is a hopelessly hackneyed car marketing phrase, but one look at the SCG003 in the naked carbon proves it's not an idle boast from Glickenhaus. Even the 'Stradale' version, complete with token number plates, appeared ready to charge through the Alps and win at Monza. Sort of now.

Two SCG300s will race at the N24 this year
Two SCG300s will race at the N24 this year
With the Competizione version available to order at the show, more information is currently available on that. The V6 twin-turbo engine is said to be "derived" from a Honda unit which implies a fairly thorough reengineering by Autotecnica Motori. And it can be swapped out (!). By designing the carbon structure with packaging flexibility in mind, Glickenhaus says the rear frame "can be easily exchanged to allow the use of different engines on the same platform." Remember the road car will use a twin-turbo V6 as well, but an engine that Glickenhaus is "specifically developing" which suggests it isn't something off the shelf.

The design is inspired by LMP1 and 2 cars, the styling by Granstudio and the aero work by Podium Engineering. Pushrod suspension is used for both models, with the Competizione racing on Dunlop tires with Bosch electronics. So close are the two models that Glickenhaus says the racer can be "easily owner converted" for road use.

As for actual motorsport, the SCG003 will be raced in a specific Glickenhaus racing program across the world after its debut at this year's Nurburgring 24-hour. So if you missed out on a P1 GTR...

The SCG003 Stradale will be ready for delivery by the end of this year, Glickenhaus promising "the experience of a modern, easy to drive race car, with downforce and engine torque that are unknown in the supercar world." Quite a USP to have. Orders are being taken now but the SCG003 obviously isn't one of those vehicles where a base RRP is released. If you have to ask and all that...

From the show floor it's the attention to detail that in the SCG's design that leaves the biggest impression. Both cars are little more than a seat, racing wheel and a dashboard of switches but it's all so beautifully done. As you would expect given the time and expense lavished on the project. When there's more on this very exciting car we'll keep you updated.

Love the sharknose detail on the racer, very apt!

€2m seems quite steep, how much does a "normal" GT3 car run you these days?

I like how the picture of the race version has a sign above saying 'Dacia'.

I hope that was on purpose for comedy value

Under half a million euros I think. You're paying for the fact this is a bespoke project I think, ground up new design and so on. I suspect there will be considerably fewer of these than a regular GT3 car as well. Looked incredible at the show!

I don't think so, as he's previously owned a Rover 25. He does look very young though.

Is the yellow shark paintwork Jordan inspired (read 'coincidence') or is there a connection with who will be running that vehicle?

Edit to add image:

He writes in a remarkably American way for someone who isn't American. I'm interested in linguistics.

I'm I losing the plot or have some post's been removed?? How big has the car turned out? I'm sure I read somewhere that he was concentrating on making it as compact as possible, could bode well for use on our roads

American Ferrari guy. Names his company Scuderia-something and offers a Stradale version. laugh

That aside it looks amazing. One would have to wonder how practical the race-to-street conversion is though and whether it will be able to hit it's claimed 1000kg/1000hp target when the governments had their say. But maybe those numbers are done up in Ferrari lingo as well.

Considering Jim's previous "affiliation" with Ferrari (and his impressive collection of Enzo's finest), I'd imagine the perfect engine choice would be the naturally-aspirated V12 from the LaFerrari, but without the hybrid nonsense.

Granted, I highly doubt Ferrari would let any of those engines go. Wasn't there some sort of falling-out between Jim and Ferrari, regarding the "Competizione" version of the P4/5?

A friend of mine was trying to buy a 575 Maranello engine and drivetrain for a one-off special he had commissioned. They initially agreed, then balked when he stated the car was going to be a hot rod. He threatened them saying he would buy a new 575M, remove the drivetrain, destroy the remaining car with a chainsaw, and then post a video of the whole thing on the internet, explaining why he had done it. Ferrari shipped him a brand-new 575 crate engine and drivetrain! biggrin

The finished result is far more than merely a "hot rod":

That looks amazing! The threat to Ferrari made me laugh

I always enjoy seeing people with the ability to express their passion, express it. He's pretty engaging with fellow petrolheads too.

Wish this all the best - and yes and the V12 from the Ferrari F12 would be my choice.

I find myself admiring Mr. Glickenhaus. I've watched some of his videos on Youtube and really like his approach to car ownership. His attitude that as petrolheads we should all run about in something fun that we have the cash to be able to easily modify and upgrade ourselves is pretty refreshing. It almost makes me want to buy an MG Midget or an MX-5 or something.

"The SCG 003 can only make it to the US imported as used automotive parts and registered as a kit car"

That's what I feared. It's already grown to 1100 kg and will have a 600hp V6 instead of the 1000hp W12. And wont be fully homologated.

You've got to admire his undeniable passion and dedication though. Can't wait to see it on the race track and some lucky collectors will be happy for sure, it's a beautiful piece of machinery.

Yeah, he has quite a personality! As many wealthy car enthusiasts are, he's somewhat eccentric and has quite the sense of humour! He has stated he's going to be buried in a hand-built belly tank. If you're unaware, belly tanks were the teardrop-shaped, disposable auxiliary fuel tanks used on many WWII fighters. After the war, American hot rodders saw the potential of the belly tanks (particularly the larger versions found on P-38 Lightnings) as a way to streamline their cars. They would build cars out of them and try to set land-speed records at the dry lakes like El Mirage and the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Back to the story: my friend, Eric, said he bought two plots, head to head, in the cemetery because "if I'm going to spend all of eternity, there, I want some room to stretch out every once in a while". The belly tank he's having built will have a large, vertical fin which will stick through the ground and serve as his tombstone! And my favorite part: he said, "I'm only putting two gauges in it, an altimeter and a temperature gauge, that way I know which way I'm going", and "I'm having it lined in Nomex, just in case"! The man is a legend! hehe The best part is he's actually doing it!

Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus 003 hard crash

From the article:
Before the N24 begins in about two hours, here is the reason why Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus ended up having one race car at the start line instead of the original planned two cars.
