RE: PHTV is here!
Discussion
Glad you are trying this, and fair play to you.
However.
The "pub" setting is naff, and half arsed applause by an unseen audience detracts from what you are doing. It's a poor man's version of the Top Gear set and a bit like those two blokes who did 5th Gear years ago.
You don't need gimmicks like that.
How about making the intro, links news and the studio pieces to camera feature around the car. In this case the Volvo. Also, perhaps doing something like this on location rather than in the "pub"
Refer to the car at the beginning, tease it a bit, go into your reports, talk about the news but with the car as the set? Two blokes on a sofa in a mock "pub"..it just doen't work.
I can't help but think that the presenters would look and sound less awkward with a car as a prop/set. It also means you are not limited by the cliché of the chesterfield, you have a setting your are comfortable with, where you can change positions between the Pre recorded features. Leaning on the bonnet of the car for example. Talking to camera while standing with the driver door open. Maybe make the bit where you talk about the car a 2-way with one presenter in the car, and the other in shot asking the questions.
You also need to work on production values with regards to things like music beds. Fading them in and out, making sure they are looped to actually last longer than the report they are under,
Loving the idea of user generated content. Scope here for proper grass roots stuff, and a lot of fun.
Avoid gimmicks.
Don't try to be funny. Humour comes naturally.
Watch for things like music beds. Get it wrong and it detracts from the good stuff.
Watch the length of sections and reports. You need to hold the viewers attention.
Get users involved.
Deconstruct what you do. Be honest with what worked and what did not.
Keep up the dialogue in your team, ideas, themes, stories. Talk about it, everyone from the cleaner to the MD could be the person with the next big idea.
Relax on camera .
Keep things simple.
Please take this as constructive criticism because I think the concept of PHTV is a great one.
Good luck with it.

I will pay cash money to see Matt present something.
How much are you offering?(Just imagine if we could get 300 to come back and do a video with Matt!)

Why does this sound like it came straight out of some sort of How To Do A Video 101 evening class? Leave them be!
I want them to do what they do well.
I want their channel to pick up more viewers.
This is after all a discussion forum where comments are invited.
You would I take it prefer that I either did not comment even though I have something I think is valid to say?
Perhaps you would prefer I took a sicophanic approach? "Guys great job, brilliant, you are sooo great" when I can see ways they can improve. Would that really be of help?
Come on. Contribute. Tell them what they did well and why. Tell them what they didn't do well and why. Tell them how you think it could be better.
Your opinion is as valid as mine.
"Leave them alone, you howwible nasty man......" Is what you are really saying.
The people behind this vid and on camera are journalists. Just like me. I am sure they will take any criticism in the spirit it was intended and if they want to tell me to fk off and mind my own business I am sure they will.

Some constructive stuff!
Taken as intended and, as above, genuinely constructive so thanks. Neither of us have much experience in this kind of thing and are generally happier behind a keyboard than in front of a camera so bear with us. Frankly I think we've both been hiding behind said sofa from the moment it went live and peering into the comments thread from behind our hands. So we appreciate the generous feedback thus far!Early days yet and we've got a load more stuff in the pipeline. And, hey, we can only get better at it. For what it's worth the goal is to just transfer the kind of conversations we have between us every day in the office/at the pub/etc onto the screen and not be too 'TV'. Of course, those in the know will realise that's not as easy as it sounds and our production team are proper pros at this and as we relax into it hopefully they'll help us get that across.
We're not out to out-Harris Harris or better Top Gear or anything like that. If PHTV is to work it's got to be ... PH!
Glad the message about people submitting content has got through too; I know there are plenty of folk able to knock out pretty decent vids and we look forward to seeing what you all come up with. Doesn't have to feature closed roads, movie-grade film rigs or heli-cam shots across Scotland either, #innocentface and all that.
Thanks!
Dan

Wait, so we're now going to be producing content for the up-front bit of PH? Sorry, I'm not entirely keen on that idea.
If you're good enough to create something interesting to watch then you're probably going to have your own YT channel (or should have), and if not then why would anyone want to watch it?
I'm very pleased that PH are going to start doing more of their own video stuff, that's a great idea, but I'm really not keen on relying on us to essentially produce your work for you. Unless there's payment involved, or some kind of goodies, of course. It kinda reminds me of car shows that charge supercar owners to park in the prime locations, when basically they're the attraction in the first place. In my own weird head, anyway.
Sorry chaps, good luck with this, but I really hope you're not going to be relying on us to generate your content for you.
There's plenty of people with access to a half decent camera who don't have the time or interest to edit and upload the content. Also, half the stories on here come from content generated from the forums/classifieds, and they are all great. This is an opportunity for the PH community to produce more content for the PH community to enjoy, professionally edited. Seems win/win to me! If you're good enough to create something interesting to watch then you're probably going to have your own YT channel (or should have), and if not then why would anyone want to watch it?
