very clear layout

That is horrific.

Whoever decided

a) to back the thing with silver plastic

and

b) to put a rectangular display in an oval window

should be fired. Happily, I would assume they already have!

Any BMW from the E3 2500 onwards had beautifully clear instruments.
yes

E30 and E36 particularly clear. smile

Not sure how the new FXX models are like by comparison.
They still are.

Whilst they are lovely clear instruments they are making my teeth itch. The photo was obviously taken whilst stationary because of the fuel and temp gauges but you appear to be doing 10 mph at 500 rpm.
Ha ha, yes it's actually switched off completely... I'm sure they're perfectly accurate!

Saab 9-5 in Night Panel mode... very good, I did like the extra touch where it lit more of the speed range as you got over about 50mph too.

I like Saabs too ; ) although I feel the Swedes know a bit about this kind of thing. The original S60 was nice too

Not quite so "clean" for UK spec cars with MPH & KPH on the speedo:

I was a passenger in an X3 with those orange numbers. I admit we are both not as young as we used to be but both of us cannot read the information, particularly the outside temperature or mpg, when lit in orange at night.
The white on black BMW instruments are still the best. We have no trouble at all with other cars with black and white clarity, just this orange thing. Anybody else?

The clearest instruments I've seen were those on my Dad's 1980 Saab 900 Turbo.

In 1989 he bought a Merc W124 230TE which also had fantastically clear dials.

In contrast the dials on the XC90 we have now, which is generally really well designed, are flawed. The numbers on the speedo only appear in 20mph increments, so you can't see the 30mph and 70mph limits and they have an irritating 'chronometer' pattern/affectation around the rim. Having said that the layout & proportions of the dials (fuel, speedo, tach, temp) is good.

Porsche having the rev counter front and center is perfect for me.

If you look, most of the dials posted so far also suffer from the same issue smile

This one is quality. The pointers are tip-to-tail, the lenses are made from mineral glass, and the rev counter makes an awesome noise, while it is pressing you into the seat.
And above 80 I've no idea what speed we're going at, because the rev counter is central.

I have a similar flavoured product.

Not only is it a very simple uncluttered display, with easy to read white on black dials, but the scaling of the numbers was just ideal.

0MPH is straight down at the 6 o'clock position, 50MPH is at 9 o'clock, 100MPH at 12 o'clock and so on.
The needle being exactly horizontal at 50MPH made it easy to judge speed at a quick glance.

Yes, they never zero. You can see the needles are on the stop pins.

No idea why but a 270deg sweep from bottom on dials can sell a car to me! Looks so much better IMO.

Another vote for older BMW dials here - the orange backlighting at night with a slight glow through the actual dials is also very soothing and not harsh.

That's starting to get a bit fussy. I was going to say how BMW have managed to keep things pretty much the same through the E30 to the E90 I have. Looks like this is yet another area where they have dropped the ball.
