I loved that feature of my old Saab 9-5. Made such a difference to night driving.

I am sure mine used to turn off the upper numbers of the speed dial as well (unless the needle went high enough) when the night button was pressed, but I might be misremembering.

The 996 dash is nice and simple too:

Don't know about you but I don't think I ever once looked at the analogue speedo, I always found myself using the digital one instead. The odd increments on the analogue one meant it was difficult to read at a glance.

That steering wheel would result in badly bruised fingers if you drove the car in a spirited manner!

why

the binacle and hub are static ( as seen again recrently in some citroen or other) ... it's the rim and spokes that move

Mk1 MX5 has a nice, simple set of dials, just a shame the oil pressure gauge is a pretend one.
The Mk1 has a proper gauge, it's the Mk2 that has the constant gauge.
I thought only early 1.6 mk1s had a proper gauge? Mine doesn't move, just stays in that position until you switch off the engine.

The angle of the spokes! They come out from the back of the wheel, so they would hit your fingers.
