No, it wasn't

it was £15,995 in 2001 (16,995 if you wanted AC)

2001?! it is now 2014

THAT WAS THIRTEEN YEARS AGO!!!

fuel was 83.5p per litre back then too.
So the car has almost doubled in price, but the petrol has only gone up around 30%.

Hmm, what was your point here?
You really don't see it do you?

the point is simple. Petrol is still the same petrol. it has no more RON's than it had before.

This car is not the same car!

it has over 100bhp more than the original not to mention all the other improvements, enhancements, development and standard equipment that wasn't even known of back in 2001

What a well timed article... looking at replacing my 8yr old astra vxr.

first of all, the astra. No go for me. 20" wheels, it's 3.5" wider than my car, which will make parking a pain.
The real killer is maintenance - those brembos are going to cost a whacking £1200 when you need to replace discs + pads. Just ridiculous.
Its also a run out model, new Astra by the end of the year, 3 door and presumably a new vxr to follow.
This car has been not nearly as popular as the H. You can get one with the aero pack for £22-23k new.

Have found a 3yr old golf gti ed35. 18k miles, £21k and no warranty.
You can get a brand new base spec gti for £23k from brokers. Not overly worried about the extra spec on an ed35.

To be honest I've never really warmed to Golfs, recently drove the mk7 R. Very fast but it didn't really appeal.
A gti would do everything I need as transport.

So, M135i then. Facelift out on 28th March. I've driven the car and liked it, gives you a little kick in the back that reminds you what you're driving which the golf r did not do. Oh, and the noise... cloud9
27700 as reported in the article is expensive, they are available brand new from 25k up from brokers and a Heathrow deal (berrys, who have a very good reputation). My spec comes in at a snip under 6k of list. Brake discs are £90 a side and you can buy a 5 year service pack for £550

Would I be mad to do anything but get the bmw?

I was recently offered a 1965 Lotus elan with just a bit of scuffed paint on the roof, for 800 quid....No joke.

I think list price is becoming less important. These days it's all about the finance details - is there a manufacturer deposit contribution, what GFV will they give on a PCP, what's the best lease deal available etc. Can't imagine many people would actually splash out £30k to buy a Honda Civic outright.
Indeed.

For buyers of cars who would prefer to actually buy their cars, for instance if they prefer to actually own it and also personalise it via ecu or hardware, perhaps for some track days etc, then the interest is when all these PCP cars come off the 2 or 3 year schemes and will there be a glut that will make them cheap to pick up?

I've already got 2016/2017 pencilled in to look at Golf R prices 2nd hand, I'm hoping the bargain 2 year PCP deals turn into bargain 2nd owner car deals... maybe, maybe not...

There's been the FN2 since the EP3. FN2 launched in 2007 at £17,627.
I hate to be that guy but it's 2015... Also worth bearing in mind for those grumbling about the Honda that the new Civic Type R is 310hp against 200 previously. I would also expect it will be a whole lot better, it's been long enough!

I would be interested to know why new Euro-zone cars aren't becoming cheaper given the current Pound /Euro exchange rates...or are just they helping to fund some of these "cheap" lease deals...

Not at all. Considering what a step up the new one is (supposed to be) compared to the old one, the price is about where I'd expect it to be. I'd be surprised if you couldn't get a bit off list.

If you're in the market for any new car the deals around are so tempting almost everywhere you look. Unless you are a committed petrolhead its kid in a sweetshop time which can only be a good thing

Thanks Matt.

You're quite right. I made a mistake. No one else is to blame. I take full responsibility.

My internal clock is clearly at least 3 months behind the rest of the world smile

It's not proper noise, its piped in via a tube or something and Kraftwerk were employed to make it sound good. Apparently.

Hopefully you will be on autosport live forum at 1.30am for first FP1 for Oz so I can talk further.

I've got the burgers in for FP1 and bacon for FP2 which is breakfast of course. First one of the year. See you later.

Yeah, the issue isn't the current prices v. prices 10-15 years ago - the issue is that you can no longer buy a light, simple, fun, 200bhp hot hatch which the 2001 Civic was. Everything has to be fully-loaded, top spec, germanic build quality, 260+bhp, etc. etc. It's our fault as consumers for being so demanding with our hot hatch requirements.

Question: If Honda miraculously re-released the 2001 Civic at £16k today, would you buy it even at that price? I'm guessing not.

So the Matt Bird Challenge 2015

You say

"Civic Type R is 310hp against 200 previously. I would also expect it will be a whole lot better"

I say

Head to head, original UK Integra R which is the grand daddy of all type R's v the latest car.

Actually I think both will get a big thumbs up but it will make a fantastic then and now article and you will get a day of jollies. Go pester Dan right now.

Anyone know what colour that VXR is ? Advert says blue but Vauxhall only offer one shade of blue for the VXR and it definitely isn't that

Who needs a hot hatch? I've just purchased a brand new MX5 (the existing NC model) nav-tech sport 2.0 for £16200.

Even if your financing they're offering large contributions and 0% free credit.
Because an MX5 is not "hot" in the slightest.

17 grand in 2001 versus inflation to now puts it at an equivalent of 25 grand, based on,

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-1...

I am not a big fan of Nurburgring times as a measure, but it is almost a minute quicker, 8.47 for the 2001 model, 7.50 for the new one.
