I thought the DRL regs didn't apply in Britain - we simply get cars with them as they are built for bigger markets...
I certainly have a car built / sold in 2012 without them - I don't think the skoda octavia scout I have just ordered has them either...
It will have :-)

I've hired a car in Norway (suzuki swift) and the lights were on all the time the ignition was on, even if you switched the lights switch to off, it didn't seem to do anything.
Scandinavian law as far as I know, they have to be on at all times. Certainly all Volvos have them switched on by default.

IIRC all NEW types as of Feb 2011 require DRLs, in the UK. So for example, a brand new 15-plate Defender won't have DRLs because the last time it had a design change was 2007, when DRLs weren't required, despite the model being made up to Dec 2015.

I thought initially the regs meant ALL new cars would require them as of Feb 2011, when infact it's simply new models coming onto the market from Feb 2011 onwards which require DRL, not existing models which haven't had any facelift/design change since before Feb 2011...
.. if that makes sense.

Base spec models of the Ford Focus don't have DRL either which I find odd, only zetec s and higher on tHe facelift
and even pre facelift which came out in 2011 only have them on the titanium x.

Even though all other fords currently built apart from the ka have them. Very odd

I see plenty of people driving in the dark with no lights on at all, many in cars I know have automatic lights which they must have switched off because they think they can manage when to put their lights on themselves.
I was going to make a post on just this topic.

Who are these types of idiots, who go out of their way to turn their DRL's to off, and disable Auto Lights?

What justification is there for any of this? are people deliberately wanting to look stupid?

For now at least the DRL or aftermarket rewire driver in 'death grey' at dusk is silhouetted on the motorway by the drivers behind. Maybe it will eventually work out because they'll eventually not be illuminated by others and be forced to move from auto mode, but it will just become bloody dangerous first. Worst of all are rewired one light out fogs and no headlights in place of dipped beam/side light innits - that's just deliberate tw@ttery

I was one of these idiots yesterday. For shame.
This is my first car with DRLs and I've only had it a few days. They are so bright that I managed to reverse off my driveway, drive through my estate and halfway down the main road before realising. I have had cars with headlights that didn't illuminate the road as well as these DRLs do. Doesn't help that the clocks are always lit too.

I'm not sure this was actually ever legislated. It was a voluntary agreement between the EU and and car manufacturers that all cars will have DRL and ESP by a certain date.

If there is legislation then it is that the car has to have them fitted, there is no requirement in the UK to use them so you could in theory remove, switch off, disconnect them or whatever and be legal.

If you think that's bad some bright spark designed my Skoda's DRLs to be in the same place as foglights are traditionally.

This is fine as I have disabled DRLs. However, the DRLs in the foglight position are also.....my sidelights which come on on both sidelight and dipped/main beam position as a slightly dimmer version of the DRLs.

Basically if I have lights on, I'm either a foglight and/or a DRL wker. I drive with no lights, as I'm scared of encountering an irate PHer.

I hate DRL's. They look stupid. Buy old.

I really don't understand the logic of not having tail lights illuminated with the DRLs.

Do that, make sidelights redundant, and bob's your uncle.

Why didn't all manufacturers just do the same as Volvo and have side lights always on (and rear lights) as DRLs? I can't see the point in adding LEDs as there really isn't a need.

Even better.

I guess the point of DRLs is that they are bright enough to be highly visible during the day, whereas sidelights can be very dim on some cars.

Surely the answer is to have clock & switch gear lit only when the normal lights are turned on.

Like someone said, if you can't see the dials, you'll need to turn your lights on - simple.

I guess with many modern dashes they are lit once the ignition is on - phone/computer screen style.

Exactly, how hard can it be to tie in the rear view dimming sensor and the headlight switch? Have it so if it is dark and the headlights are off then don't back light any of the interior screens.

I guess this functionality would become redundant when the legislation is passed to make automatic headlights mandatory.

Although Volvos turned off the rear lights when they changed to DRLs. Very confusing when I changed from the V50 to later C30 (compounded as they reversed the switch operation at the same time.

My car is fitted with DRL's but has an on/off switch as well. When I realised it doesn't put the tails lights I just switched them off and use sidelights instead.

Typically Europe, do half a job, make a mess that everyone else has to deal with..

My car has auto lights, which I have disabled - partly because I don't want them to come on when I drive under a bridge and my car is too stupid to realise that it hasn't actually gone to pitch dark inside 3 seconds, but mostly because my dials are so dark I can't read them unless they're illuminated, so against my own will I drive with side lights on constantly.

Same story with auto wipers, annoyingly I can't turn mine off - so they choose a random speed irrespective of the conditions.

Have to say since buying my new car (and it having DRL's, and an always lit dash) I've actually driven at night without lights on once already. It's so easily done if you hop in the car, are preoccupied (talking to someone or something) and your subconscious I guess is acknowledging there is illumination up front and the dash is lit up, therefore the lights are on and you can proceed.

Honestly in like.. 15 years of motoring I've never been able to understand the clowns who drive around at night without their lights on, as I've always had cars with no kind of auto lights and a dashboard that remains dark until the lights are on - but this has caught me out more than once.

However I'm now checking every time I get in for the lights, just to make sure I don't forget...
