The Humer Unbeam Interesting Filling Stations Thread
Discussion
On the Bath Road between Reading and Newbury is the site of the UK's first filling station. It was built by AA in 1919 for their members and was operated by a patrolman.
As it was.
As it is now. I waited for ages for an AA van. Gave up in the end.
The owner of the forge in nearby Aldermaston saw the benefits of selling fuel and the location of his pump - which had to be behind a wall - is marked by the square hole still there in the wall of the forge's yard in The Street, Aldermaston.
I don't believe there was a great deal of choice.

This is a great thread. There I was, really enjoying these old filling stations but lamenting none was close to me when it occurred to me that my local man is that rare thing, an independent petrol station. Not so photogenic as many of the others and always 15p a litre more than ASDA but I try to use him for all my fuel and some of my mechanical work: a case of use it or lose it, I guess. Plus I can waste 20 minutes talking crap in there any time.
I give you Steve's garage in Widdrington Station.

Excellent thread! Two in Somerset came to mind as soon as I opened this.

I think the Shop was built around 2006, it used to look like this and was attended when it was still open:
Loxton
There also used to be one here in Axbridge, the Ford/Kia garage before it was knocked down what must be getting on for more than 15 years ago?

Surprised we have not had the Applecross community filling station:
And then there is the first of two in Lochcarron. Until recently this one was attended and you had to wait for the shop girl in the Spa to be free and to come across the road to serve you.
The Lochcarron garage is a more regular sort of place:

This is still a working station in Highgate, North London. The shop sell good cakes and coffee. It used to be a pub.
It also used to be a brothel back in Dickens's time (he lived across the road briefly).I worked here in the 1980's as a pump attendant in Saturday's and Sunday's when it was part of John Nicol Cars ltd. He sold nearly new exotica such as Ferraris and the like so there was always interesting stuff in the showroom. In addition Hexagon Highgate was just down the road so we used to get lovely stuff like Batmobiles coming in for fuel.
The owner lived in the lower two story part on the right, which looks unprepossessing but was absolutely lovely inside, and he also owned the taller older building on whe left which was two flats. The top one was rented to my brother so I spent a lot of time here over the years. I used to live in Hampstead near the Royal Free so usually had to run from there to my job most mornings which is a good few miles pretty much all uphill which was hard going at 0630 am - especially when I had usually been out until 2 or 3 am as a mad young thing...
Interesting people used to come in and have their car filled up - Sting lived around the corner, Terry Gilliam in Pond Square and another Python, Graham Chapman, used to bring his beautiful electric blue Aston convertible in which I would happily not only fill up, but check the water, oil, brake fluid etc on just for the pleasure of looking under the bonnet (whilst pointedly ignoring all the mundane ford escorts and the like etc backed up down the road honking impatiently as they tried to get in to the small forecourt.
