Starcross in South Devon. I saw it recently from the train and this week when I was delivering a car down that way I took a bit of a detour for a top up.

It's that lovely part of the south Devon coast where the railway runs adjacent to the sea along by Dawlish that tends only to appear in the media when the sea washes the track away.

The owner, who served me at the pumps, said he'd had enough and had applied for planning permission for flats.

STARCROSS GARAGE - MOORING SERVICES

Marvellous.

But as marvellous as it is, I think the next one gets my vote. It's at Blackmore near Ingatestone in Essex. Two brothers - presumably the Wakelins - run it and have run it for as long as anyone can remember. As you pull in one of them emerges from the cottage on the right.

Untroubled by progress, the two old boys carry on as they always have. So that's closed on Sunday, closed for an hour at lunchtime, half day Wednesday.

Long may they continue.

Clearly a emporium named and fitted expressly for the servicing and maintenance of PH's favourite means of conveyance, the bargain barge. Marvellous indeed.

Meant to put this up but hadn't got around to taking any photos.

On the A36 at Wellow, between Ower and Salisbury:

I used to live in Wellow (local pronunciation "Weller") when I were a lad, and it hasn't changed in 50 years, apart from the pumps.

Cheapest coal on the A36!

In the late 70s a friend was a service engineer, he had a visa card when they were quite rare

He was in Norfolk, saw a 2 pump petrol station with a hut displaying the visa sign so stopped, the old guy came out of the Hut to fill it up then they returned to the Hut to pay

He handed over the visa card, the old guy looked at it, said thanks very much then put it in the till

Remember this place from when I lived in the village as a kid. Nothing much has changed.

I use this garage on a regular basis. Proper family run affair and they can turn their engineering knowledge to pretty much anything.

In the sticks in Zummerzet south of Wincanton. I'd picked up a skanky Zafira in yet another derelict Second War aerodrome with less than half a tank of fumes and needed some fuel badly.

"Diesel?" probed le patron suspiciously.
"Yes, please."
"Cash?" unable to contain his distrust.
"Yes. Could I have a receipt?"
"Of course," all hurt suddenly.

You only sell diesel and you only deal in cash. How could I possibly think a receipt might be a stretch?

Not a petrol station but had to stop and take a pic on the way through Lochearnhead in the pissing rain! I loved the look of the building. All up for sale so no doubt will be getting knocked down soon. Sorry about the terrible car blocking the view.

It's been in that state for donkey's ages. There used to be another which did petrol just before the village on this site:

This is a fantastic thread.

This isn't a petrol starting but still a nice garage in Kings Heath

This is a nice old Ford showroom in Odiham, Hants. Can't see any sign of them but I swear there used to be pumps here (Gulf from what I remember)

Believe or not there used to be a private petrol station behind the shutter on the left. May even still be there

And this is the remains of the petrol station at the bottom of my road. Not that interesting except for the building on the right Regency Garage used to have a barbers shop inside it where the windows are - that was the barbers. Had my first haircut there over 40 years ago

Garages most welcome, JC. They are mentioned in the opening post but didn't make it into the thread title for some reason.*

* A lady asked Dr Johnson why he had defined a word incorrectly in his original English Dictionary: "Ignorance, Madam, pure ignorance."

Well with that in mind... This has to be one of my favourite "motoring" type buildings in the country
