Driving back from Wadebridge in Cornwall I stopped to fill up in Hallworthy which I mistakenly thought was the north edge of Dartmoor; it was certainly bleak enough. Gadzooks it was bleak. The building to the right is the shop. The window displays would have been more enticing if there had been more in the way of windows.

On the other hand, the area wasn't entirely devoid of humour. A comely young woman was found to be running a wayside caff from a nearby lay by.

Nearer home, here in Newbury, is a fully functioning car sales emporium that looks like this:

If you peep inside there is an MGB GT and a Wildcat.

Sorry, that should have read wild cat.

It's probably part of the unwritten code, all semi-derelict car lots/ex-filling stations must have at least one building made of crumbly durestos sheet and have a cat of uncertain origin.

Came across this one in Reading the other week.
Not sure if it's been posted or not...

Cheating a bit but....there was a great garage north of Banbury at Little Bourton on the A423.

This is what you would have seen in the mid 70s

Forgive the rubbish pictures, but you get the idea.

Sadly, you'd drive straight past it today...

Pass these a few times a year on the Ardnurmurchan Peninsula. You go into the shop nearby and the owner fills the car up for you. Probably the most scenic I've ever been to.

Not a filling station but an odd car showroom.

I don't know if it's there now but it certainly was around 7 years ago.

It was in Coalville, Leics. On a main road in the town. It was basically a glass fronted office with about 10 very high end classic cars and bikes displayed. They weren't for sale oddly, just sitting there getting a bit dusty.

I went in the office behind and asked a few questions to try and find out why a few vintage Rolls Royces and Bentleys etc were in an office in Coalville but the people weren't giving much away.

It was a long term feature as I originally saw it about 15 years previous and it didn't look like the cars had been touched.

I'd love to know if anybody has any more info or is aware of the site.

Not great TBH, most of them have died out. The most recent victim is Victoria, used to be the main A30 with 2 filling stations, no completely bypassed and one closed soon after (or before) the other is still open but with a brand new Service station now open just up the road (and closer to the A30) I don't think it has long!

2009 - Station closed but there.

The top 2 have changed again, no longer a car sales - think it's a pet food sales.

The bottom picture - was trading late '80s early '90's. This part, going down to Roseworthy Dip was still the main A30 into the late '80s, possibly until very early '90s. The Camborne/Redruth By-Pass was built in the '70s but it only went from Scorrior to Camborne West. The rest was extended since, Blackwater end in '88 and I think towards Hayle after that again.

I love both of those - not sure I have ever purchased petrol from the Kilchoan one but have paid a lot for some at the other, although isn't that Strontian rather than Acharacle? Great little shop attached to it.

Cheers for clearing that up, I wasn't born until '84 hehe

I didn't know that the bypass stopped at Camborne west!, explains why the bit through roseworthy is as crap as it is, why in gods name they didn't make that all dual carriageway, it's carnage in the summer!

My Grandad lived in a cottage right by where they were building the viaduct over Illogan (in line with Taylors Tyres), was impressive watching the equipment building it in the '70s.

It was left 'incomplete' at Camborne West for many years before they added on the 3 lane bit.

Bearing in mind where you work(ed), it's hard to believe the road turning to single carriageway there and going past Smokey Joes & through Blackwater, Hawkins was a popular filling station.

I still work here and it does amaze me what it must have been like for that the be the main road! Would love to have seen it then and when they were putting the dual carriageway in!

I passed through Llandrindod Wells last week and slowed to take in the thread famous "Humer unbeam" site, a bit further up the road was another Automotive building that I have not seen mentioned on this thread before.
