Is Wales the underworld? I suppose Port Talbot is a bit like Hades.

Well, I have to say I thought it was a bit odd but when I went back with a better camera I couldn't find the place. Plus Finkley doesn't seem to appear on any of my maps. Did I mention the red and white '58 Plymouth Fury?

Cool thread. Love going to rural parts of Wales, northern England and Scotland and seeing the independent, oldschool or abandoned petrol stations.

Knowing that the Hound of Hades had three heads and a serpent for a tail I looked up the Hound of Port Talbot.

This is just down the road from me. The Manor Road Garage in East Preston, W Sussex, was built in the 1930s. It was abandoned in 1973 and lay derelict for years - rumour has it there were some interesting cars inside! The site was developed a few years ago into apartments. They restored the frontage/pumps which is a great touch.

Oh now that is nice and kudos to the developers for keeping and restoring the pumps, a lovely touch.

Grade 2 listing may have affected the decision/planning permission, but agree that looks splendid.

Yeah, I suspect the listing was due to the fantastic Art Deco design but they really have gone to town on that, restoration of the pumps alone must have cost a bomb.

I really want one of those old pumps, or at least a globe - but even my employers have had to pay silly money to get hold of some, as nobody saw the value in them when replacing the pumps back in the 70s!

The photos on this thread are incredible. The garage even contained six steam engines.

....Given the six steam engines, two Rollers and all the other stuff there would be pushing half a million quids worth of stuff there - I bet the estate got 2/6 for it!

The Forge Garage, Burghfield Common.

The amiable chap I spoke to said it had been a garage for fifty years and before that it had been the forge. The main building was the blacksmith's cottage and his forge next door was where the workshop is now. He tried to find the landlord who lives two doors down to ask about old photos but he wasn't in. I said I'd look on the internet and sure enough:

It appears C Fisher was a Registered Shoeing Smith (I read with interest).
