Cocoa trim was "the" unique 550 Spyder feature but it was a no cost delete option so the subset of cars that exist with the Charcoal trim may win some additional kudos amongst those who decide to seek one out..

However, my point is that I believe that early 986s will have enduring appeal due to the purity of the concept and the lines (which were diluted with the facelift model - although I strongly prefer the glass window top).

What I don't believe for a minute is that down the road, anybody will attempt to build themselves a 'replica' of a 986 550 Spyder (starting with a base 986) because as nice as they are, I just don't see them as the holy grail and don't believe they should be put on a pedestal as the definitive or indeed the only worthy 986 but that of course is just my opinion.

I'm beginning to think that the 2.5L has a bit of what the 308 Vetroresina has. The later 328's were clearly better cars in many ways but as time marches on, the intrinsic qualities of the original example (and the likely scarcity of pristine original examples) will not be overlooked by the market IMO.
From an investment point of view the issue you have is production numbers. Around 3000 308s? AGainst 160,000 986s.

As I say I am not detracting from what is a great little car but I spend my days helping people invest in Porsches, not once have I helped anyone into a 986 to make money, nor do I expect to.

I see the 550 as similar to what the GTS is to the 981 or the Black Edition was to the 987. Some cosmetic gloss over to differentiate from the S, some extra options thrown at it all of which are nice to have rather than essential, a bit more power good for pub talk and marketing. The sports suspension is a nice option to have IMO, but the older these cars get the less important it becomes as the suspension gets tired. Outside of the GT cars not many Porsche come with the M030/X73 or whatever sports suspension package as standard. As for the two-tone wheels, this seems to be an increasingly popular choice amongst newer Porsche models.

I currently have a 996tt but have a soft spot for a 986. They are just to cheap for porsche ownership. I do think that they will rise soon. Not crazy money but a £5k boxster will be £8-£10k in the next 24 months or sooner. Its the MK1 boxster. The MK1 of anything becomes the one to have. A Golf GTI MK1 now is fetching a great price and rising yet how many MK1 Golfs were produced? I read somewhere over 6,000,000.

I think I shall buy a couple of low milage cars. I missed a local 2.5 in guards red with 47k miles for under £5k recently. Bargains to be had.
