If you do get a Fiesta, get the Ecoboost. A much much. Better engine than the rather gutless 1.25.

some of the suggestions clearly aren't taking into account an 18 year old and the pain he is going to experience with insurance.

I would go down the nearly new Fiesta route with the 1.0 ecoboost engine. Could pick up a nice one for maybe £7-8k and save the remainder.....

I would get a 1.2 C1/ 108 (the Aygo isn't built in 1.2). They're quite fun, cheap to insure and have things like reversing camera, Bluetooth, USB, Auto lights, mirror screen etc.

Cheap to insure and cheap to fuel. They've been out less than a year so will still be modern when you finish university and for a small car they are reasonably good on the motor way.

Not sure that's correct. Budget is 15k to include insurance.

Why would you want to burn money on a years insurance?

Well they are clearly not on the breadline, so I doubt it matters too much (within reason)

A big budget for a new car at 18!? I envy your position and I imagine a lot of people will which makes your decision even more important. Blowing it on a Peugeot 3008 though, why do you like them? It's a MPV right? confused

I've had 2 fiesta ZS's a few years into driving and they were both great. Is this money yours or part of a it must be new or we're not even entertaining this, kind of clause? New - I can't help because much cheaper cars are my territory these days so can't help. Near new - Fiesta ZS, nice spec and easily under 10k. Doesn't matter - anything cheap and reliable and pocket all that lovely money! lick

Get something cool (so not a 3008) that you won't mind writing off.

Why oh why would you want to spend that sort of money on a car that will take you less than a month to reverse into something? I call troll, surely no 18 year old would consider spending 10-15k on a diesel Peugeot mpv?

If you aren't trolling then I apologise, my advice to you would be to spend £700 on a vw polo 1.4, insure it for as cheap as possible and invest the rest of the money in property,. If I had the opportunity to get on the property ladder at 18 I would.

For the record I'm 18, passed my test a year ago and bought a 1.4 vw polo for £1100 biglaugh (took me 2 weeks to reverse into something)

Well my eyes have been well and truly opened to older cars, that BMW looks very nice! To be perfectly honest though I think 2005 would be the oldest my parents would allow me to buy for longevity reasons. The 3008 I was looking at was a 2014 facelift one with all leather interior, it had a three part boot hatch which I thought would be really useful for the beach or something. To the person doubting my taste for an 18 year old, there are ski slopes in northern Scotland which I would like to utilise hence the huge boot and high ride height. To be honest Id prefer to spend above £9000 as I think it's a sort of "buy a car" deal where they wont give me any money I don't spend out of the budget, that sounds harsh but Id rather get the best I can.

Putting somwthing aside into a savings account to start saving towards a good deposit is actually a very, very, very sensible idea

OP, budget out £5000 for car and insurance. Put the £10,000 into savings.

You must be joking, no 18 year old would want a diesel MPV as there first car.

Sounds dull, if you want practicality and ride height buy a LR RR, get one for 15k easy and the insurance, I suspect wouldn't be that high as its not a 'young' persons car.

Especially with going to uni, get something small and stty with low insurance... tell the 'rents to put the money in a saver until you finish uni. By then, much nicer cars will be insurable.

This is a very common misconception that I was trying to dispel with my red BMW on the last page!

I bought that car with 134,000 miles, it's now sixteen years old and has 156,000 miles. It puts many far newer cars to shame. My mum has a 2006 Mondeo, and the exhaust fell off that recently. My fiancée's 2007 Fiesta is on its third steering rack. Age and mileage are absolutely not guarantees of reliability or running costs, the key is buying a car that was engineered properly in the first place and then looked after.

If I had the choice between a low mileage car built on a budget, or something known to be reliable but twice the age and mileage, I'd take option number two every time, and my experience backs up my logic. In any case, would you really be keeping the car longer than a few years?

I can understand your point about wanting to spend a good chunk of the money. In that case, find a happy medium between your original idea of something nearly-new and our possibly-a-bit-too-much suggestions of fifteen year old semi-performance cars. Just do an Auto Trader search for anything 5-10 years old and under £10k and see what takes your fancy. You'll be amazed what shows up!

I found going up a class made the insurance cheaper for me. So I ended up with a Mazda6.

A brand new VW Up is well within budget, will do all you need, is fun to drive and costs buttons to run.

SEAT Mii or Skoda Citigo are even cheaper.

So, you're an 18 year old lad who has just passed his test, right?

Yet you're considering dropping £9,000 of your £15,000 budget on a Peugeot three double oh fking eight?!

Is this a wind up?

I'd spend a couple of grand on something vaguely interesting, use and abuse it and then save the rest. It's guaranteed to look far better than the Peugeot, your mates won't take the piss and you might attract some fanny, if you're lucky. I can't imagine the local talent foaming at the gash when you rock up in a 3008!

I know what my parents are like, they won't give me the remaining money to invest so investment is not an option frown. If it was I would spend 2k on a car and then buy 13k of premium bonds but sadly I cannot. Im checking out the suggestions though.
thanks,
