I did, which is why I haven't questioned the OP's bizarre premise so far!

It really does happen. And it feels great when classmates in brand new PCPed Fiestas and Fiat 500s ask you how on earth you can afford to drive around in an Audi, when it cost you £950 hehe

It's the confusion on the insurance aspect that really gets them hehe

Why oh why would you want to spend that sort of money on a car that will take you less than a month to reverse into something? I call troll, surely no 18 year old would consider spending 10-15k on a diesel Peugeot mpv?

If you aren't trolling then I apologise, my advice to you would be to spend £700 on a vw polo 1.4, insure it for as cheap as possible and invest the rest of the money in property,. If I had the opportunity to get on the property ladder at 18 I would.

For the record I'm 18, passed my test a year ago and bought a 1.4 vw polo for £1100 biglaugh (took me 2 weeks to reverse into something)
Spot the chap who didn't go to a public school hehe
And proud of it! hehe I also dodged the uni debt and landed an engineering apprenticeship, meaning that every penny that has been spent on my car, insurance and everything that comes with it has come from my own pocket and therefore, imo, I appreciate it more than somebody who has acquired a car through their parents.

Im 23 and have around 4k to spend on my first car, having been passed for 5 years...
Im looking at a 133 Twingo, 1.6 NA engine, cheap parts, decent mpg, and i can throw it around!

15k is a ludicrous amount for a first car, but if you have that amount to spend then use it wisely.

Buying a newer car will be a pointless endeavour, which you'll find out when you first hit something, youll want something which is cheap to run, although if you are getting 15k for your first car i doubt student finance will be paying for university.

Insurance will be your biggest killer, hence why everyone is offering older cars to you, but for 15k you could pick up pretty much whatever you wanted on the under 10k bracket, and use the rest to insure.... of which there is alot of good cars to look at.

Starter

Mid range

Top end for insurance.

all of these are under half your budget, but youll be one of the few at uni with a car, even if it was a shed, you'd still be the one guy 'shopping trips' will be useful to have as a mate!!

But please dont go for the 3008... everyone is thinking it.... in no way is that got chick appeal im afraid.

@KJ ah so now you're bringing your opinion on my situation into this! Can we please just keep this on the car please? rather than making sly jabs... i know how car insurance works and how it is calculated.

The chicks will love a guy with an MPV. You seem adamant on getting a 3008, take a look at a Fiat Multipla instead, even better!

Get a cheap fiesta or pug.

That way you can make all the mistakes in your first 2 years and it won't cost you too much i.e. 'modding' it with anything cheap and nasty, dinking it, possibly crashing it.

Get your insurance premiums down a bit and then look at something nice. If you are a true petrol head you will regret paying up to £15k for an underpowered new car that you are simply buying to keep up with your mates 'image' issues.

£15k buys a serious amount of car on the 2nd hand market....bide your time young Padawan

Well my eyes have been well and truly opened to older cars, that BMW looks very nice! To be perfectly honest though I think 2005 would be the oldest my parents would allow me to buy for longevity reasons. The 3008 I was looking at was a 2014 facelift one with all leather interior, it had a three part boot hatch which I thought would be really useful for the beach or something. To the person doubting my taste for an 18 year old, there are ski slopes in northern Scotland which I would like to utilise hence the huge boot and high ride height. To be honest Id prefer to spend above £9000 as I think it's a sort of "buy a car" deal where they wont give me any money I don't spend out of the budget, that sounds harsh but Id rather get the best I can.

Yeah, make sure that you get your money's worth from your parents.

It's the least they deserve.

Ahoy!,
I would like to buy my first car, my parents have given me a budget of £15000.

I could probably stretch to 16k if I put my own money in, which I don't want to given the fact I'm going to uni)
So you are not buying a car then.

You are off to university. Buy a snotter and save your parents' money.

Volkswagen Polo 6n.

It's cheap on insurance and easy to replace anything if it gets damaged.

So essentially it is a case of 'you have this much money on a new/near new car or we're not helping'? Sounds like my parents lol, and a few years ago I would have agreed with the low mileage, as new as possible ethos. If they're stuck in there ways then just go with the 'best' car you can get out of them. It sounds like you want some space and possibly something a little higher/4x4? This is out of my area as I like small hatchback cars but it'll be different to look into this for a change, off I go. read

My parents faces are pictures of disbelief and shock when I tell them any of our 3 cars are around 100k, Audi at 116k. Its not a case of imminent destruction followed by death but more likely regular maintenance coupled with a couple of larger bills. Well used cars FTW! rotate

At 18, with the premise that you could be gifted a car up to the value of £15k and you don't even have an opinion of your own outside of a 3008?

You must have something more in mind? Do you live under a rock? Have you ever made a decision for yourself?!

I just don't get it, it's such an unusual thread. At 18 I would be looking at the sportiest, least practical-whilst-still-excusable car I could find if my folks were so generous!

I can only assume this is trolling but if not then wow.

Buying a new/nearly new 15k diesel with your parents money is the worst possible thing you could do. Spend <= £1k of your money on an older petrol car. As a new driver who is clearly not a petrolhead I guarantee you will scratch/damage/completely destroy your first car within the first year, on an old shed this doesn't matter so much. Spending your own money on the car will make you value it in a way you never could if it was bought for you, you can also learn to maintain and repair the car yourself which will teach you a lot and save you a lot of money.

Once you have a couple of years driving experience in your old shed then maybe think about something better.

In fairness, most people have just been saying how lucky you are - I'm sure you realise that already smile I don't read KJ as taking shots at you.

On the insurance point, I'm not being facetious but many people are surprised by how it really does work, particularly by the weighting against perceived risk, not performance or engine size. Certainly I wouldn't discount anything on the grounds of insurance without getting a quote first. I had a 2.6 V6 Audi when I was your age, cost £900 to insure.

You don't need much ground clearance to go skiing in Scotland in the winter. ANY car on winter tyres will be absolutely fine. Any small car on skinny summer rubber will also probably be fine. Please don't buy an MPV.

Thats exactly what i want http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/imgs/2.gif ! ideally i would want a 300hp fast car but im just thinking in terms of insurane that may be problematic in the long run, ive never really looked at young peoples cars or anything before because i originally didnt want to drive until after university. Any rediculously powered options with sub group 17 insurance?
