Personally I don't think there is any simple formula you can apply to decide what is and isn't a supercar.
Would a 9 year old want a poster of it on their bedroom wall?

DBS? smile
Golf R? rofl

Doesn't an M135i have 2 exhausts?

A Supercar is mid-engine and V12.

Well according to his own forumla he got the figures wrong since the M135i has three doors and 3 wipers, so should score 2.7. Personally I don't think there is any simple formula you can apply to decide what is and isn't a supercar.
You're both wrong- it only has two exhausts. It may well be a Junior Supercar but it is certainly not a proper ///M car getmecoat

Porsche 928
I was pondering this - pound for pound (ignoring running cost etc).

Although they are super, I'd say more 'Super GT'
Back in its day, all the road tests described the 928 as a supercar, at one point in its life it was the fastest production car in the world (1986 I think).

So - we're all agreed? - "supercar-ness" is a personal opinion or viewpoint, not an attribute of the car....

One man's supercar is another's rattly old classic / boring modern eurobox / tired old cliché (delete as appropriate)

We need to somehow figure out a proper set of criteria, get lots of opinions and sort of go with the most popular ones.

I'll sound off.

Supercar:
- Mid engined
- V12 and up (or a turbo V8 or some kind of hybrid thing)
- E.g. Lambo Miura, Ferrari F40, Enzo, LaFerrari, McLaren F1, P1, Porsche 959 etc.

Sportscar:
- Car designed to be fun and/or fast
- Variable engine type
- RWD or 4WD
- e.g. Toyota GT86, Porsche 911, Ferrari 458, Lambo Hurracan, Audi R8

Track car:
- Can be used on the road, but uncompromised and designed primarily to be used on a race track
- E.g. Ariel atom, Caterham, BAC mono etc.

GT car:
- Fast large capacity sportscars that emphasise speed and refinement over agile, chuckable handling.
- FR or F4 layout
- e.g. Aston Martins, Bentley Continental GT, Ferrari FF etc.

Sports saloons:
- E.g. BMW M3, M5, Audi RS etc.

Hot hatches:
- Hotted up version of mundane shopping trolleys.
- Have a hatch back.
- FF or F4 layout
- E.g. Civic Type R, Megane R26, Focus RS etc.

Front drive coupe:
- E.g. VW Scirocco, Honda Integra etc.

Off-roader:
- e.g. Defender, G wagen, Discovery, Landcruiser etc.

SUV:
- Crap off roaders, but good for light off road use.
- e.g. BMW X5, Toyota Rav 4 etc.

MPV:
- Van-like things people buy because they're not allowed anything nice.

The Porsche 859 is a flat 6 engine.

The Mercedes Gullwing is a straight six, and I think it is a supercar

The Porsche rear engined, the Merc front.

The Jaguar XKSS another straight six front engined effort

For example, someone in Norfolk would probably consider an Allegro to be a supercar while someone living in central London who sees 911's and Gallardos all day long has long since stopped thinking they are anything special at all.
Oy! stop bashing good ole Norfolk ... Although you probably are correct with your assumption.

The 959 which I do believe is a supercar (and is a bloody good car at that!) is only 6 cylinders and rear engined as opposed to mid engined.

What about the BMW i8 and it's 3 cylinder offering?

OK, ok!

Allow me to modify...

Supercar:
- Mid engined
- V12 and up (or a turbo V8 or a turbo flat 6 or above or some kind of hybrid thing)
- E.g. Lambo Miura, Ferrari F40, Enzo, LaFerrari, McLaren F1, P1, Porsche 959 etc.

For the record, I would class the Merc 300 SL gullwing as a supercar, rather a very good GT car, and the E-type also falls in that category. I think Lambo or Ferrari came up with the first supercar. Just my humble opinion, of course.

The BMW i8 isn't what I'd call a supercar. That falls under the sportscar category.

Not to be argumentative, but I'm not sure I'd call the E-Type a supercar - more a GT...

I think he's claiming the 300Sl and the XkSS are not supercars and has missed out the word not. The 300SL won the mille miglia and in 1954 was incredibly fast, a road legal race car. Same with the XKSS IMO, based on the D-type which won Le Mans, will another car which won Le Mans outright be offered as a road car these days? I doubt it somehow. Same deal with the McLaren F1. The Mercedes and Jaguar seem tame today but there has to be a historical perspective added to the question 'What is a supercar?"/

Looking at its performance compared to its contemporaries, I'd say the 300SL has a far better claims to the name than the Gallardo.

It's about the looks and presence. And to joe public it looks amazing, unique and expensive.

So let's be honest it's going to be any Ferrari, Bugatti, Lamborghini, gt40, mcclaren.

I actually doubt Porsche would be there except maybe the 959 or their recent hyper car. 911's et al are everywhere and commonplace.

Not saying they aren't super, but they don't have presence I'm afraid.
