My favourites:
3. Daimler Double Six Vanden Plas - fold down tables, shag pile carpets, and a V12!
2. Rover SD1 Janspeed twin turbo V8 - discreet, with effortless overtaking - whoooosh!
1. Rover SD1 Vitesse - less discreet, with big spoilers and a louder V8 exhaust burble. Loved it.
Thanks for all the memorable cars we drove around in throughout the 70s & 80s Dad. RIP.

This machine was epic.

2.4 petrol, rear wheel drive, and massive inside. I crashed it into our letterbox on my first ever drive, and it ditched its entire exhaust system once which made it sound like an airplane. My dad drove it around like that for some time until Toyota had a spare. Huge laugh.

My dad had one of these, early one on a b plate with digital dash

Widely regarded as crap these days but to an eight year old a talking dash and acceleration that used to scare my friends in the back it was just awesome - it eventually rusted away I guess but I have always loved the montego to this very day because of it - it was also supremely reliable and dependable giving him a good 5odd years of trouble free motoring I think the worst it ever needed was a new water pump and a fuel pump

Chopped in for a peugeot 405 GLD Turbo and it just wasn't the same
Excellent. Only regarded as crap by the ignorant. Had several and still have one which soon will pass its thirtieth birthday.

Here's my father's first car. A pre-war Talbot London tourer.

Had many happy times in that car with my brother, I was twelve when he sold it.

He would pick me up from school on field/games days and several of my eleven year old school mates would climb in and he'd drop them off at home. This was in the days when there would only be one or two cars ever parked down our street. Now folks fight over parking spaces there...such is progress.

He sold it around 1954 and I have long since believed it must have been long since recycled. I was delighted to discover it was still around. Not only that, in good shape. I put the registration on a thread about reg-nos and someone googled it and came up with my post. He then contacted me with the above photo of the car. Amazing.

My dad bought an MG Maestro 2.0 EFi after giving up trying to keep his Peugeot 205 XR(?) going. The Peugeot had constant issues with the clutch/gearbox and fuelling so when driving round town it was either stalling or you couldn't select a gear, he's never had a Peugeot since!

Anyway I wasn't convinced about the Maestro until we went for a blast in it and I was pleasantly surprised with the gutsy O series engine and pretty good ride and handling. It was also very spacious and comfortable and never gave any bother in the 3 years he had it. A rather underrated car in my opinion.

Difficult one!

My earliest memories of being in a car are sitting in my booster seat in the back of my dads mk4 xr3i, radiant red with white pearlescent wheel trims. But I think my favorite has to be his Saab 9000 Carlson, that was the first 'quick' car I had been in and to me it was a rocket ship, over 200hp at that time seemed like all the power in the world!

That would be the 1936 straight 6 Dodge. After our 28 Chev, & the 1930 Dodge, that 36 model was a Limousine in the later 50s. Cars were still in short supply in the 50s in Oz. Any car was great, this was brilliant.

It could cruise at a steady 65/70 on the poor gravel roads of country NSW Oz, all day, in unbelievable comfort & safety.

My Mum had one of these. Happily once I was old enough to hold a driving licence. Happy memories, like you say a very under-rated car. Ours was BRG, the best colour. Used to get to drive it from Carmarthen to Northumberland and back to fetch grandparents for Christmas, then take them home again. At the time (I was a student) I had a 1.6L Ford Orion, which was an utter dog in comparison.

The one that stands out the most was the brand new 1982 RX7 complete with turbo conversion...I can remember being 5 years and constantly hearing the buzzer that RX's love near the redline. He said that car was a flyer.

It was 1976...I'll never forget the day my Dad arrivied home with a 1974 Truimph 2500pi estate in bright red, it was awesome and fast as hell compared to the run of the mill cars of the time.
My Dad had the saloon in maroon from 1974 to 1976. It used five star petrol. That didn't help sales.

1. Mercedes 500 SEC - the arm that gave you the seatbelt amazed me
2. Citroen XM due to the way it rose up when you switched the ignition on
3. Audi 200 Avant quattro

Dad had an original Audi Quattro which put out 250bhp he claims.

I got a bit of a reputation at school because he would give my mates lifts home and he loved getting away from the lights quickly. For a little boy it was like being in a rocket ship.

Oh and standout memory when someone shunted into the back of him and dented the boot. Went to the dealer and he took one look and came outside with a very large sledge hammer and then proceded to hammer it back into place. Now that's dealer service for you smile

My dad had two of these. At the same time...

One was red. One was two tone brown.
That made me chuckle - a school friend's dad had a drive full of the things never less than 2 - one was a spares car, he was always swapping parts from one to the other. Damn they always had noisy tappets no matter how often he adjusted them.
If I recall correctly, one was a Chrysler Alpine, and one was a Talbot when Chrysler pulled out.
I also recall it being car of the year or some such when launched.

And yes, the red one (older) was gradually reduced to keep the brown one going.

My Dad also had a Stag in the 90's. White with black soft & hard top. I still remember the registration. In fact I can remember the registration of all my Dads cars that he had in my lifetime!

Vauxhall Carlton L
Vauxhall Carlton CDi
Triumph Stag
BMW 520i
BMW 523i
Mercedes E240 Avantgarde
BMW X5

My fathers car choices have definitely influenced my own car buying. I have loved BMWs ever since the mid 90s when my father got his first one. I have since owned 5 of them.

was the first car i ever "drove" stepdad allowed me to turn it around at the end of the road. have very fond memories of it,she was named "jellybus". it must be said its not the favourite of his cars though.

i think my favourite / most remembered was the nissan bluebird or the granada estate (tough call).

Seeing how some of you got rheumy eyed over some brochure scans of an old Granada, I'll start a thread with some more brochure pics of 80's metal. Don't expect anything exotic, just run of the mill stuff you got ferried about in if your of a certain age. First up another offering from Henry, a Capri, not the glamour puss 2.8 injection but her more staider sister, the Ghia. I'll post more pics as and when I can. Enjoy.

One of these, in 2400 GTi form, back in 1980. Even at 4 years old I knew the car was cool, but it still made me sick quite often biggrin
