I would tend to agree, they were an absolute bargain and prices have hardened up. However, the used performance/classic car market is just getting too hot with alot of hype being whipped up and people looking to cash in.
The 996 Turbo doesnt have the low production numbers of a 993 and isnt old enough to have many rotted or crashed to dwindle the numbers like a 930.
Buy one to have fun, but dont expect it to rocket in value any time soon.
Not bothered about rocketing, staying the same and retaining your capital is better than most folk manage with a run of the mill car, even a ten grand misery spec supermini will theoretically depreciate more in four years than a 996 will.

Ok, that sounds a bit like Quentin Wilson advising Mondeo buyers they can have a Bentley Turbo R for the same money, and it is but a significant part of the cost of owning a car for most is depreciation, ask the original owners of these 996 Turbos.

If you can fund one (or something similar) and afford to run it, overall it will end up cheaper than leasing an Audi A5 over the same period.

Same for lots of cars in a smaller way, older Boxsters, Z4's, 350Z's, S2000's etc don't seem to be plummeting in value, they depreciate like any other car but then hit a level, you dont get any of them for much less than five, run it for a year or two and sell it for pretty much the same amount.



Can some owners try and put me off with tales of massive bills please ?

I have always-always liked these and was saving the cash for one as my next car back in 2007, when some American sub prime lenders decided to go tits up and I needed the cash to keep other family afloat.

Would I still buy one, as a second (third) car in 2 years time (2017), when its the wife's turn to have the family saloon car again?

Possibly yes, but that is dependent on how much more expensive the manual R8 V10's, or R35 GTR's are going to be that the 996T in 2017.

On the subject of the 911 Turbo...

This new video is lovely: Magnus Walker collects a RHD 1975 turbo from Australia and compares it to the 2015 model.

Thoughtful. And very much a treat for the ear.

This is similar to the London property market. Ten years ago a basement flat in east London wouldn't appeal to anyone except the most financially stretched. Now as full houses are out of reach, even middle class professionals are snapping up lousy property in 'Up and coming' lousy places they wouldn't have considered before...........The 914 must be the next hot ticket. No ?

I suppose the question is, how long til the bubble bursts?

Ever since the mid/late 90's classic car values have been increasing pretty much without fail year on year and there's no sign of it slowing any time soon.

Pretty much every car I've sold over the past 10 years is worth more now than when i sold it, some many times over.

Yes it's a convertible, but black really suits the 996 and it's an X50manual with the performance upgrade.
That is special , I really like that a lot smile

So, being as 996 turbos are around the same price as a BMW M3 CSL, which one would you be the better choice both in driving and as an investment??
Does anyone have experience of driving both? I myslef have been in a 996 turbo tiptronic, and it was rapid to say the least.

Couple of years ago??

I did just that last year from a specialist dealer who mispriced the car after not realising what a holy grail a low mileage (50k) manual X50 was worth smile

I would have to go with the M3 CSL here. There's far fewer of them than there is 996 turbos and they have held their value consistently over the years. As a driving experience the M3 CSL is far, far better imo.

But how much do they cost to run?

How many items going wrong give a four figure bill for example ? 1 or 10?

As all 911 base carrera models will shortly be Turbo the badge will cease to mean anything. 996 Turbo models will head south.

Brakes front/back roughly £900 for discs and pads.

Clutch varies.... Porsche quoted me £2700, Dove House did it for £1100!

Its not cheap to run/repair, but this needs to be put into perspective as this was a £100k car when new.

If you compare the prices % wise against a Mondeo (which i also own smile) then there isnt a huge discrepancy.

Minor service and brake fluid change at a main dealer cost me £344 on tuesday - thats pretty resonable given the car.

I had an immaculate, low mileage manual box 2003 996 Turbo .. modded mildly by DMS, Rocket of a car.

Owned it 8 months , sold it for a loss & bought a CSL

What I lost on the turbo, I've made back up almost with the CSL smile

Personally, the turbo was a fantastic car , superb at everything it did ... but I never loved it

The CSL is different to the turbo & no way near as quick, but it is so much more fun. I've never regretted the swap and I don't long for a nother turbo. What I do know is , if I sold the CSL, within weeks I'd be back looking for another. They get under your skin

£800 doesnt sound so bad, Front disks are £117 from Frazerparts, rears are £111, plus the pads I reckon it could be done for under £600 if you do them yourself.

£1100 for a clutch is great, it isnt much less than that on normal cars.

Tyres, rears look like £250 ish and fronts around £100, so £700 - £800 a set, that sound right.

Service doesn't sound bad, think I would do oil changes myself.

It has a cam chain instead of a belt.

my worry would be the engine but they seem pretty robust compared to the N/A but it is the whole turbo, intercooler, injection, radiator, heat exchanger, exhaust thing that concerns me.

My one was Silver with grey... was AWFUL! terrible colour interior! Black looks far better.

Least mine didn't have the ruffled leather that one looks like it has!
