I'm sure I'm doing nothing wrong but I'm getting so much bother, thought I'd check.

M40 heading East into London, past the Beaconsfield exit. I do this journey every evening. Four lanes. About a mile before the M25 exit the overhead signs tell you to get into the correct lanes. The 2 right lanes go straight on for London (that's me) and the 2 left lanes for the M25.

Because I am usually poodling along, in no great hurry, doing 60-65, I'm normally in the inside lane, so I indicate right and gradually move across so I'm sitting in lane 3. I don't cut anyone up, there's no hurry to get across, you have tonnes of time.

But when I'm in lane 3 of 4, I'd say probably every other night, some idiot will come hairing up behind me and stary flashing me to move over. Of course I don't, because I'm in the inside lane of the 2 London bound lanes, and I'm not about to move into the outside M25 bound lane. Eventually they get fed up of flashing, see I'm not going anywhere, and overtake me in lane 4. Often shaking fists and mouthing "fking get over", or similar.

What's wrong with these people? They are usually heading into town too so must know the outside 2 lanes are the London lanes. Although one tt who had flashed me, once ahead of me, suddenly realised he was about to miss the M25 turn off and had to veer across lane 4&3 to get into lane 2, which made me laugh.

Anyone else use this stretch of road and encounter similar idiocy.

Your final point is the answer.

They're simply not paying attention to the signs.

You are changing lanes to early I suspect.

Just because a sign tells you what happens a mile away doesn't mean you have to be in the correct lane a mile away.

I use it all the time. It's configured for rush hour and the signs make total sense at that time. What you are doing is correct as I'm sure you know. You get outstanding levels of ttishness at that junction. I tend to take the whole section in the outside lane with the faster traffic. I've seen some diabolical nonsense go on there over the years. I find the worst bit is the Wycombe section where it's very briefly five lanes going up the hill toward Beaconsfield. The speed differential is way too great there.

I know this bit of road and just had a quick look at Google Streetview.

I think that you are probably moving over a bit early.

You are likely to be in the right technically, but the more stupid road users out there won't understand that.

You are probably better to move over at the second set of signs when there is a dashed line between the 2nd and 3rd lane designating the separation is taking place. There is still plenty of space thereafter.

The issue is your speed, most people are doing 80+ if it's clear, a 15 to 20 differerential in speed. If I was doing your speed I would wait for the 1/2 mile mark to move over.

Basically as above, these people are unthinking berks.

The signs may be in position suitable for when the road is busy and someone in lane 1 could need some time to get across to lane 3. So if the road is quiet then moving across at the signs may be a bit too early for the outside lane flyers limited intelligence.

That stretch I'm invariably heading M25 and T5wards so don't have the same problem, especially as it usually before 5am.

Off topic but I do find some M40 users to be particularly brain dead. Anything from the determined 55-60 in the middle lane with nothing in lane 1, with suitably unnecessary and random braking thrown in for good measure; all the way up to the equally brain dead 3 figure speeds approaching 3 lanes into 1 roadworks, still > 100 past several red x closed lane signs and trying to jam in yards before the cones.

I take the point about moving over early, but often I've been flashed when I'm will into the section with the short dashed lines between lanes 2 & 3 by which time you should be in your correct lane and not looking to move over. It's quite bizarre.

I realise I'm not breaking any land speed records but 60-65 mph is a perfectly acceptable m/way speed for someone who's in no particular rush, especially if you're in the inside lane, which lane 3 technically is if you're heading into town.

I use the same route every single morning, nothing wrong with what you're doing OP. Just ignore the muppets.

As per the other replies you're doing nothing wrong but maybe leave it a little later.

What I really don't get with the kind of people who engage in this sort of stupidity is that very often they'll sit right on someone's bumper when the outside lane is clear and they could just overtake.

Take the old A40 if you're in no particular rush you could even have pint at the Royal Standard or one of the several pubs in Denham village. There you are sorted that one for you! Next...

Have a pint at the Royal standard. Always a good idea. I was there not long ago and, staring idly out the window, I saw a badger ambling up, it looked at me somewhat affably and just wondered off. Love that place, they overdo it with all the 'oldest pub' cobblers but the beer is very good. As is the whiskey selection.

But if I stop in Denham Village I might bump into Cilla, and according to the celebrity thread running in the lounge, that's to be avoided!

The problem changing later is that you'll most likely clash with those in lane 4 waiting until the last second before swerving off to the M25. Id carry i as you are and laugh at the idiots flashing etc (it's their heart attack)

It's similar on the M4 with 3 lanes for London and 1 for M25, except the M25 lane starts life as a slip road onto the M4 from Slough. So you get a bunch of wkers cutting accross both ways making the traffic very tedious going home.

It's a combination of st driving and poor road layout causing this, sadly neither of which are easily solvable!

Purely as it is bothering you a bit I would use it to clear out the cobwebs and get up to a heady 75 or 80 indicated for a Mike or so.

what do the hgv's do on this stretch? When do they move over?
