I'd agree that the 928 was well ahead of its time, but put it next to today's cars and it doesn't look new at all.

Whilst an Audi A2 may look "modern" in isolation because it's quite minimalist, if it were designed today it would be angrier and have twin exhausts.

I can't think of anything old that does a convincing job of looking like it could have been designed in 2016. Some old Porches maybe, but purely because the new ones are deliberately designed to look like they always have done.

Someone might think an S2000 still looks good but there's no way it would come out looking like that now.

This

The 924/944/928 shape hasn't aged at all and still looks fresh today.

The interior gives it away, hardly surprising since the shape was launched in the 70's. Contemparies included, Ford Cortinas, Austin Allegros, Triumph TR7s & Vauxhall Cavaliers, MGBs were still current and Mercedes were just launching the W123 E class.

Are you lot fking mental? fk me. Have you actually seen what cars look like these days?

I think the original TT looks modern still for a 20 year old car.

All cars look like the era when they were launched, the fashions of their day give them away.

I suggested one of these in another thread, originally launched in 2003:-

I think that the Vauxhall Calibra's design has done rather well for itself.

I think anyone who suggests the Porsche 928 doesn't understand the question. They looked futuristic when they were in production but very dated today. They looked good because they looked futuristic but having lost that aspect they no longer even look good.

They look awful and dated.

It seems that many posters are unable to differentiate between "Looks modern" and "That you like".

Thanks to pedestrian safety requirements, LED lighting and countless airbags, there isn;t anythgin old which looks modern. 928 and Calibra have narrow pillars and small wheels. Saab 9-3 was a pretty good update of an essentially old design. E46 BMW - the early ones look archaic, and the later ones just look ten years old. Etc, etc etc.

saw a 2006 audi a6, had to double check the reg, still looked modern and new. any others?
To be fair, that's because Audi haven't really changed their styling for decades. You can even fit the "gappy grille" and LED DRLs to older models if you want ...
That's one of the things I like about them, they look the same across the range and haven't changed much with time either. Your average member of the public wouldn't tell the difference between a 2015 A4 diesel, my 2007 A6 V8 or even a 2005 A8 W12, the top models are therefore rather stealthy.

99.99% of people will think a 928 is a 100 year old banger.

13 years isn't the longest time, but this is the first correct answer.

I'm starting to think that. I thought they came out around 2010

These threads pop up every once in a while, and every single time people completely miss the bloody point.

To suggest a 928 looks modern is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, it's a very pure design that has aged gracefully, but it looks nothing like any modern car.

I have a 2007 Merc CLS and I think the outside of that still looks fairly fresh. I think the Ford SportKa still looks quite modern as well.

I guess there's a difference between cars that look good today and cars that look as modern as something that appeared recently. I think the MKI TT holds its own around modern cars but is dated compared to the latest model.

It's the lights, door handles and wheels that give these away.

It's invariably how these threads go. Same way as the facelift threads where people don't know what a facelift is.

FWIW I still think the three-door MKII pre-facelift FIAT Punto basic shape would cut it today as a new model if the light clusters front and rear were tarted up a little.

Launched in 1999 but still looks years ahead of cars like the Suzuki Celerio and Mitsu Mirage which are current models.

You're right, it looks nothing like a new car. Looks to damn good.
