Black Boxes for Cheaper Insurance - Experiences?
Discussion
You'll likely be on a curfew and not meant to use the car after 11pm. If you're going to go on hoons then perhaps a black box isn't for you as it will pick up sharper acceleration, braking etc. It would be pretty stupid having one to bring insurance down and then do things that the black box would report on that would increase your insurance.
You aren't looking for an R8 are you? On finance?

The one I saw had no curfew, just driving between 11pm and 5am was considered bad or riskier or however it's phrased. Not for an R8 unfortunately, and not a wind up. I need to renew my insurance in the next few weeks and was quoted over £100 cheaper with one of these from Sheilas Wheels (for men now apparently). 95% of my driving is sedate plodding about, but when the road opens up I have been known to enjoy my V8...
What car is it may i ask? As previously said there's really no point. People that do go ahead with these are generally young drivers who have only just passed their test. Most will only do it for a year or 2 after they've got a few years driving experience/NCB and then don't bother afterwards. I advise against these things either way in any case but that's a different argument altogether. The difference in price never appears to be night and day anyway in my experience so I've never seen the point.
My experience with black boxes is a good one, I have no curfews and driving as I normally would has put my insurance down £50-£100 over the year.
On the other hand, if I could avoid getting one then I would, the only reason I got a black box because my insurance was $1700 with it or £3300 without, so I had no choice really.

How much of that £100 difference will be eaten up by surcharges for "risky" driving?Get one of the driving recorder apps on your phone and see how they rate you, especially in a more powerful car.
If you really do have a V8 it's most likely you will be able to accelerate and safely corner quicker, but this will give you higher G forces than the average driver\car and may work against you.
