Thought this might happen, picked a mate up from Luton Airport, there is a no stopping zone on the roundabout as you have to pay to drop off or pick up now. However traffic jam & going no where, so my mate just jumped in the car. We still did not go anywhere for a few mins & then carried on our way. We saw the Smart Car Stazi mobile.

£40 fine in the post, clearly the video would show us going nowhere.

Not sure how they can justify a fine if you can prove you were blocked in and unable to move. I'd appeal on those grounds!

From the wording on the sign it could be argued that you didn't stop to drop off or pick up, you stopped because the traffic was stationery.

There's a spot closer to the dropoff where the git can't get you, I know this doesn't help but I feel smug saying it biggrin

But someone got into the paper car.

The sign says "No stopping at any time to drop off or pick up". Strictly speaking he didn't, he stopped because the traffic was stationery. Semantics I know, but rules is rules biggrin

Tell them your friend was attempting to car jack you, but you ended up talking him down then just giving him a lift somewhere.

Could you pen some more thoughts on this? I have an inkling you might have some interesting contribution to make. Staple your thoughts to the mast, as it were.

Unfortunately it was a Co car & the fine has already been paid. I just won't ever use Luton again out of choice, simple as that!

It transpires its an APCOA non enforceable one too, its not contravening road traffic reg's but a private enforcement job. Which makes it even more asshole'ish

Are you asking me for the helicopter overview? Let me take an idea shower and I'll get back to you.

I think he's been lead down this path.

I had a similar thing at Brum airport. I was dropping a colleague off for a flight. As you may know there is a drop off area that you need to now pay to use.

We were sat in a non moving queue of traffic, so said colleague just hops out with a "save you the bother of using the drop off area" and off to the terminal. So once the traffic moves again, I just carry on and out to the motorway.

Well that was the plan. The on site police then stop me in the road on the double yellows and give me a grilling because there was a no stopping rule.

I pointed out that I wasn't moving because of the traffic, and that now we are holding up more traffic because he's pulled me over.

Luckily he was in a "good mood" so wouldn't take it any further rolleyes

This whole pay to drop off/pick up thing at airports just takes the piss. I've paid my ticket, including various taxes levied by the airport operator. Take your £3 out of that. Now if there ever was a situation treating a motorist as a cash cow, this is it. I'd like to hear any argument against it...

It begs the question with this sort of thing - how much control are you meant to have over your passenger? If they decide that they are going to get out of the car whilst it is stationary in traffic, is the driver meant to prevent them from doing so in some way?

A few months ago in my local paper there was a story where a driver received a fine when waiting at a zebra crossing because their passenger got out of the car. The driver didn't hold anyone up as there were still people using the crossing, but he got the fine anyway.

So what exactly are we meant to do? Chain them up until we're good and ready to let them go? rolleyes

Stansted Airport has a cheeky drop-off area similar to this, except you pay at a barrier when you leave. The missus had an early flight from there last year, so we stayed in a nearby B&B. The night before the flight we drove to the airport to see where she needed to be, saw the turning for the Drop-Off area on the roundabout and I drove up there with the intention of going straight through, seeing where she needed to be, then back to the B&B. Except here, when you get to the top of the small hill on a one-way section of road, you find out there's a toll to pay at the end. Only a quid for ten minutes, but I was pissed off that I wasn't told there's a toll until you reach the point of no return. The barriers are automated too so I couldn't call anyone to say I had just driven through, and its lucky the missus had a quid as if she didn't we'd have been trapped there.

A sign before you turn off the roundabout and get to the end of a one-way section would have been nice instead of suckering you in. I wonder how many other people have been caught out like that?

How can one make the most of the media out of this, would love to persuade people not use Luton & use elsewhere that does not rip people off.

I am due to go Skiing in a few weeks & LTN was on my list as I'm working nearby when I get back. But now I won't & will fly from elsewhere instead.

Just take a photo of the airport, it's a concrete hellish nightmare, pretty sure nobody uses it out of perceived loyalty or ranking it as a good airport. It's purely cost.

Same thing happened to a colleague

Whenever I collect anyone now, I pre-warn them before they land and lock the car doors so if they do saunter out, they can't get in to the car!

All so they can milk a couple of quid out of each person.

Stansted used to have a nice little drop-off area; never that busy, lovely and convenient.
Removed now - £2 to drop someone off.

Do what I do. Tell the missus to drive down to the car rental return area and park with hazards on at the end of the walkway. No camera, no nazis, no tickets. This exact spot: https://www.google.co.uk/maps?q=51.892547,+0.26693...wink

Twitter/Facebook? That's usually what people do with this sort of thing. It can get the required result quite quickly in some cases, although I would guess the Parking Stazi won't worry about being hated.
