Does anyone know of a van hire company who hire (preferably LWB) transits or similar with tow bars?

Yes.

There's a place that hires LWB Transits with tow bars in Wick.

Thanks for that. Name please?

Let's narrow the geographical location down a tad shall we - am based West of London but will travel (not to Wick!) for a trannie with a tow bar!

Check your towing entitlements and the plated weights on the tow vehicle and the trailer.

I don't think the majors (except possibly Ryder) will supply towbars but some of the smaller indepenents who operate mainly used vans might have one.

Be careful with weights... transit's have surprisingly poor towing capability.

Do you need a van? You might have more luck hiring a landrover defender or a hilux etc. My old man just had the same issue trying to hire something with a towbar, ended up hiring a 110.

This...

A pickup truck with a full ladder chassis will be a far better tow vehicle.

SHB 4x4 hire are the best for that.

I'd need the van for some bulky items. I thought there were vans that could tow a decent sized trailer. Maybe I was wrong!

We may just hire a van and tow it with a 4x4 separately.

No issues on licence smile

There's a place called "Pitter Self Drive" around here (Southampton) that does, or at least that used to. Still a bit of a trek from London though, there must be somewhere near you. Unless they've changed it, one of their vans has a nice dent in the top where I tried to reverse a trailer into a tight garage and forgot the van was taller than the door. banghead

ETA: Looking at it, their website doesn't mention tow bars, but most of their vans had them when I last hired one. I wonder if other places around you are the same, perhaps worth phoning a few.

My local firms will only hire vehicles with tow hitches is you are providing (and have proof of, I presume)
your own insurance. Which is basically just for companies.

Apparently it's very hard for them to get suitable insurance. I borrowed the rents A6 Avant, with driver.
