Sandtoft near Doncaster - it's a huge vehicle distribution compound for Lookers Group, and also a remarketing site for end of lease vehicles. It looks full in that picture, but much like Bruntingthorpe, https://goo.gl/maps/I9dRX , Immingham, https://goo.gl/maps/qd0Ey and Bedford https://goo.gl/maps/WY9Ns , the stock turns over pretty quickly, with a combination of new vehicles coming in, and end of life vehicles being prepped for resale.
There's loads more cars in that first link than the ones you posted though - I reckon there's 15,000 cars there.

Why?
Because a year old car is not a new one.
If it is to current model year spec and your name is the first one on the log book, it is a new car.

I always thought every new car these days had an owner already. So be that for a dealer or private individual the car has been ordered by somebody. All that means no need for cars to be sitting round doing nothing.

There's probably about 12,000 cars at Sheerness at the moment - all VWG cars, all on their way to dealers.

There aren't the fields of thousands upon thousands of unsold cars now, that all stopped around 2008/2009, sure manufacturers do pre order some cars for stock but the vast majority now are all built to order; whether dealer stock, demo's or customer orders.

That's far more likely to be true of European manufactured cars - where the transportation from factory to dealer will take days - than for cars manufactured in the Far East, where it may take weeks.

B'sides, if we're talking about utterly generic stuff, there'll be a handful of very common specs - stock - and anything unusual will then be factory-ordered, if you're happy to wait.

Nothing new and seen much evidence of it here in the UK on several occasions.

Back in the late 1960s, my boss asked me to jump in his Daimler and he drove me to a remote field in Essex full of new unsold cars.... dozens maybe hundreds of 'em. He parked near a Zephyr 4 and passed me some keys and I drove the car back to our premises.

Since then by luck during my job travels have come across several areas (fields ~ airfields ~ disused quarries etc ) full of new unsold cars.

Do not know what the current situation is, but there was a time when manufacturers preferred to produce more cars than they sell rather than turn buyers away through lack of new stock. On three occasions during my new car buying experience, I have been unable to purchase a new car because of a silly long waiting list. All sold out or export quotas satisfied first.

That's be true of people like LandRover - indeed they hold orders in pre-order queues before even loading them - but most other manufacturers will be loading dummy orders and hoping they can get a customer order against it before the spec becomes unchangeable.

It's vital the production lines runs at full capacity so that car production makes economic sense. The incremental cost of building an unsold car is relatively small, but run the line at half capacity and each car produced would lose a lot of money.

Not really, they may order a small amount to reduce lead times but it really is a small amount. The lead times aren't that much longer, say 3 or 4 weeks more than something built in France or Germany.

I was on the M5 a few days ago at Motorway speed. I was passed by a un-registered plateless new car on Trade Plates. Must have been doing 80+mph. How new is that?

By the way, my grain of sand is bigger than you'n.... wink
