a debadged Volvo T5.
Oddly, looking at Volvos a lot of the bigger engine cars are in the lower spec trim levels, while the smaller engined cars are all "R Design"http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015... looks quite innocent!
Another would be the early Audi A3 3.2 Quattro Sports - look like anyother 1.9TDI/1.6, and the Skoda Suberb 3.6 V6.
2 VW's from me, I always thought the V10 5.0 Touareg was a bit excessive, and it didnt show much of what it had under the skin
Also, the W8 Passat, 4.0 engine giving 280hp in what looked fairly rep-mobiley
I think the Phaeton gave the game away a bit because once everyone knew what it was, they also knew to stay away from it at traffic lights or 3rd gear overtakes

I'm afraid you are all wrong.
The best Q car out of the factory is the one that started it all back in 1968: The Mercedes 300SEL 6.3.
Fastest 4 door saloon in the world when it came out. 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 137 mph. Which doesn't seem a lot now, but back then was as quick, if not quicker than a lot of sports cars.
AMG even made a 6.8 litre racing version, which isn't quite as subtle:

Knew what they were? And what's that exactly? A big VW?I don't suppose there are many W12 Phaeton's out there....The V10 TDI is rare (and Q car) enough let alone the W12.

6.9 V8, 260bhp and 405 ft/lb of torque were serious numbers in the mid 70's. However it was the manner in which it was all achieved that was so impressive. All contemporary tests attest to the fact that it was near silent, as fast as any sports car and handled with reasonable agility thanks to super complex hydro pneumatic suspension. It was a serious bit of kit - fully dry sumped, lsd and ABS. Not only that, it looked absolutely standard (inside it had full walnut dash and a rev counter compared to the standard 450SEL, outside, standard fit alloys and headlamp wipers which were cost options on the rest of the range). Also, it was eye wateringly expensive. By 1980 it was over £30k, same as a Silver Shadow II, twice the price of a Daimler Double Six and £10k more than a Ferrari 308.

Looks like any other Big Audi Family Wagon and I don't think anyone would expect such a large car to move so quick in straights AND Round corners.

MB may have started it all in 1968 in terms of European manufacturers, but they were just copying the format the yanks had been doing for the previous 10 years.....
Biggest engine (or road going NASCAR race engine required for homologation purposes) stuffed into the smallest sedan (saloon) that it would fit in, and often sold in the most basic poverty spec going. Street sleeper road cars were a yank invention, not a European one I'm afraid.
