10-12k Summer fun.......R32 or Porsche 996 !?!

Shame this is gone:

That had a Q2 LSD, so arguably better than Haldex unless you're intending to visit continental Europe on a skiing trip.
Busso V6 trumps VR6?

Off the line in the wet you are probably right but the in gear thump in the back you get from the Monaro's V8, especially when supercharged is something else. As for sound, try this:

Love it. All out of OPs budget though ;-)https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=htvTzFx2zuU

996 all day.
The big, scary IMS problem apparently affects only a very small percentage of cars (~5% IIRC), so don't let that put you off. Aside from that issue, they do seem to develop lots of other small, less ruinous niggles which Im sure could spoil the ownership experience for some. A quick browse on afew OCs will show you many, many owners with totally reliable cars- a bit of luck required with 996s it seems...
I'm also of the opinion that early 996s (not convertibles!) are due a jump in value in the not-too-distant future, so potential 'free' motoring if you decide to keep it for a bit. Hold out for one in a non-shonky colour (Ocean Jade :-0 ), keep the OEM amber lights. Full Porsche/ specialist history is a must for me. Tiptronic is allegedly quite good- mine would have to have a stick.
R32 Golf does nothing for me. I'm sure it's brilliant for what it is, but faced with a choice between 911 or Golf...
I too thought (hoped!) you were referring to an R32 Skyline, shame you don't want to go Jap turbo, as that's a car which represents a viable alternative to a 911. 6 speed manual mkiv Supra TT would be very high on my list for ~£10K, but then Im somewhat biased.
Plenty of other great suggestions here already- AMGs and Monaro are standing out to me. £10-12K gives you so much choice right now, just a shame you can't get away with 2 seats (mk2 Elise/ VX220, by the way!).

I had a 4 door MKIV R32 for quite a while, also around 5 years of Evo's, 330 BMW, V8 S4, 2 x 205 GTI's both 1.6 & 1.9 to mention a few and currently in a V8 RS4.
The car I miss the most is the R32, I really did prefer driving it on the Highland roads when I got used to it. After leaving the turbo fun of the Evo's it took at least a year to really start to enjoy the Golf and understand how to get the best from it.
The only issues I had over 50k or so miles was the top mount bearings, radiator fan and the boot lock
A lot more capable car than most give credit for and I for one would have another

Do R26.Rs have rear seats?:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JiAglkspc8
Are they available for under £10K?
Do you want fun or an upmarket superhatch with a prestige badge?
No and no unfortunatelyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JiAglkspc8

Im a fan (i have a meg cup) but anyone looking at a golf or a 911 is likely to be brought to tears by Renault's approach to interiors and electrics
This is a tricky question. I wouldn't want the risks associated with a 12k 996 and an r32 would bore me to death as i walked up to it.
Id buy the skyline or look at some of the special edition imprezas ( can you get a spec-c or similar at that money?)
