Chaps

Mrs OS has recently acquired a 3 door Seat Ibiza, and while on the whole she's very pleased with it, it does seem awfully noisy (mostly tyre/road and wind noise).

I realise I can't do a lot about the wind noise but I was looking at installing some sound deadening mats like these under the carpet and in the boot to hopefully soak up some of the road noise.

Anyone done this before, and did it have much of an effect? I did try and persuade her that another LS400 on the fleet would be a great idea (and like a library in comparison) but she wasn't overly impressed by my mpg hehe

Just spent the last half hour reading your thread, very impressive! Don't think I'll be going to town as much as you have, I plan on doing the boot and under the rear seats first because that seems to be where a lot of the noise is coming from. If that seems to make a difference then it's going to be a front seats and carpet out job to do the rest of the floor.

There's a thread on the Seat Cupra forum about removing the door cards on an Ibiza and it looks like a right pig of a job so I'm hoping I can get away without doing them.

Thanks smile

I'm waaaay behind on this though, should have been done & dusted over a year ago! I'm sorting the go faster bits first then finishing up over summer.

That MLV in the thread is very heavy so if performance is a factor here Id have a think, there must be a good 70kgs of extra deadening in the car now! Bigger turbo to be fitted soon so I'm not too bothered!

The CLD (deadening) goes down first then ive added CCF (closed cell foam) and this acts as a decoupler for the MLV (mass loaded vinyl....heavy stuff!!) Just need to be careful how much you apply as my door cards wouldn't go back on at first so had to go slightly thinner and carpet was a swine to get back on as the plastic trim wouldn't fit back in properly!

If it's the rear try and deaden above the wheel well and exhaust tunnel. That might be enough....then it's chase the one annoying rattle time....

Ref the silent coat Id just get the 2mm stuff and leave the more expensive 4mm multi layer extra as its a pig to work with, hardly bends so great for flat surfaces but anything curved and its a mare.

No idea on the Seat sorry budd, maybe a few done on Talk Audio though. But deadening the doors made a huge difference in mine, ive also done the rear shelf as its got a pair of 6x9 subs fitted here and this made a big difference. It feels like there's a nice little 10" living in the boot.

Personally I would recommend using Dynamat.

It is a sound deadening material, which once heated up and stuck to any panels, provides astounding levels of sound deadening. On our transporter sportline the road noise was unbearable, and the van generally felt 'hollow'. But after the sound deadening the van is as quiet as a Mercedes! the sound system also sounds fantastic although that got upgraded at the same time.

If you flick down a few pics on the first page of my transporters buildthread you'll see the Dynamat installed on the panels.

Its expensive stuff, but a little goes a long way especially in a small car. knocking a panel with my knuckles before they would vibrate and sound tinny, where as if I do it now it is like banging your knuckles on a solid wall because the dynamat absorbs almost all the vibrations. Amazing stuff.

Bloody hell that was some job!

I`m looking to quieten down a van, just road noise really so it looks like I`ll be opting for the 2mm Silentcoat.

Do you really need to use a roller or can you pat/rub it down with your hands?

You can use your hands but it will stick better with a roller. I used a small wallpaper roller from B&Q.

Did the doors on my Subaru with Silent Coat and closed cell foam. Much better, and the doors close with a thunk rather than a ping smile

That silent coat is really good stuff at stopping panel vibration, which is good for reducing noise such as exhaust drone, panel vibration etc.
To reduce airborne sound such as tyre noise you would be better off with a dense foam type material.
For even better results use both.

Don't fall into the mentality that you need to cover every part of a panel with that silent coat, you don't. About 75% coverage is enough to add the extra mass needed to stop it vibrating.

The silent coat is also regarded as one of the best and a better option than Dynamat once you take cost into account.

I have fitted it to 2 different cars now and never used a roller and it stuck just fine.

I've installed 2mm Silent Coat and 9mm Dodo Matt (the self-adhesive stuff) in my car… done the floors, doors, rear bulkhead and firewall (just got the 2mm stuff under the bonnet at the moment) and the results are brilliant!

The car had NO sound insulation in at all when I started - 70pmph was pretty unpleasant. You literally had to shout if you wanted to have a conversation with a passenger and I had ringing in my ears after any journey longer than a few mins (and I've been a fan of the mighty Motorhead for nearly 30 years so I'm used to loud noises! hehe)

At a steady 70 you can now have a normally conversation and the car is a lot less tiring to drive on longer journeys. It's a fair bit of work to do all the panels but I found it strangely satisfying.

Would definitely recommend both Silent Coat and Dodo Matt products.

I did a discovery with roof flashing once, it worked really well and its cheap.

The sound deadening I got of the internet (can't remember the name) looked just like flashing, so I did the rest in flashing.

I installed a complete "lead sandwich" kit from a company called Noise Killer in my MG ZR a few years ago and it made no difference.

It was exactly what it sounds you are describing - big heavy noise absorbing sheets under the carpets and boot floor. I came to believe that road noise or the absence thereof was mainly a product of the design of the car.

It was a waste of money and I certainly would not do it again.

(I also tried something called flashing tape - big strips of stuff they use to waterproof roves - which was meant to be a poor man's substitute for Dynamat. I was unemployed at the time and spent a full week completely stripping the car interior and fitting the stuff. It made no difference to the noise level. It made the car heavier and all of the trim rattled when I screwed it back together afterward.)

The expensive dynamat approach may well work for all I know, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were a better all round solution to just buy an old Mondeo or Accord or for motorway journeys.

Im not saying all sound deadening is flashing, but the dirt cheap stuff is just an expensive way of buying flashing.

That amazes me because I absolutely covered the interior of my ZR in flashing tape - a minimum of two layers on every panel and 3 or 4 where I felt the noise was worse. It absolutely did not work.

The only time I thought it was making a difference was after the car had been in the sun for a while and warmed up and all the black goop they make it out of turned goopy again (or at least that's what I assume was happening.)

Do not bother.

I did fit it with a heat gun.
I guess a car with stiff suspension will also transfer sound through harder bushes into the shell?

Yep i have deadened every car i own due to the stereo and it does make a difference

Admittedly the roof of my last car had that much that you could stand on it with no bending or distortion of the panel at all

smile back at it over summer!

I just used the missis hair dyer & some places I could roller but in tighter gaps like the outer door skin had to get in there with my fingers. You cut your fingers to shreds aswell btw!! I tried gloves but they just get in the way.

Takes ages but decent Cider helps.....lots & lots of cider wink

Tried the flashing tape on a previous car, it stinks & on a hot day the stuff goes all goey. Dynamats probably better that silent coat but works out miles more expensive if you'r using a lot. Must be £500 worth of deadening in mine now, dread to think how much all Dynamat products would have costed!!

I cannot remember the name of the last stuff i used in my old car but it was something on another level compared to dynamat/Second skin, all i remember is instead of a hair dryer to warm it up it was practicaly solid and unbendable until it was heated up with a hot air gun and even then it did not have much bend in it so when it cooled on the panels it was rock solid

As you can see in this vid when i close the drivers door a bit (not fully) it practically cuts out all the music and considering what i was running that is impressive
