Its time for my own what car!

So budget is £7k no more!
Estate is Essential, I think
MPG is not an issue
Transmission is free

I would love my first V8..

I am currently leaning towards an S4... what else should I be considering?

They are fine machines but I think I am going to be fussy here, no FWD unless it's really interesting..

How about a nice Subaru Legacy, various quickish models to choose from at different ages. This looks nice:

Left field suggestion? 156 GTA SW?

It might not be a V8 but that V6 doesn't make a bad noise!

Seven grand should see you in an early/leggy Audi RS6, will blow the rest into the weeds.

As a 550i Touring owner I couldnt recommend anything else...

There's one on the Trader at the minute but it's been on there a while which makes me slightly dubious.

They normally last about a week, the last one lasted 2 days and that was whilst the other one was still listed.

Interesting prospect, how does the B5 2.7 Compare to the B6/7 4.2 on the road do we know?

Aren't the early RS6's ruinous to run? As much as I would love one the horror stories, well horrify me!

Interesting suggestions as well, not sure about the Subaru a bit meh for me unfortunately, Alfa is FWD is it not? 550 would be awesome but too rare frown

AMG options - C43 (V8 and some decent load space) or C32 (supercharged V6)

Actually you'd get a great Impreza wagon for less than your budget. Don't know why I didn't think of that before as I own a Subaru smash

They are phenomenal cars & great for all daily duties as well as more enthusiastic driving. Your budget would probably find one with the PPP pack as well which will run 280 bhp.

That V6 makes a fking awesome noise. Good look trying to find one though. Took me long enough to find a saloon. Very few around.

Could do this:

I am trying to imagine the world of financial pain a 7 grand performance estate car can generate.

The B5 with a remap will see off a B7, where as a K04 B5 will eat it for breakfast no problem.
With the correct mods you can run a very reliable and usable 500bhp S4, I used mine daily and loved it.
I'd even go to say it was more fun than my B5 RS4
