I am trying to imagine the world of financial pain a 7 grand performance estate car can generate.
Where is your sense of adventure man???

The B5 with a remap will see off a B7, where as a K04 B5 will eat it for breakfast no problem.
With the correct mods you can run a very reliable and usable 500bhp S4, I used mine daily and loved it.
I'd even go to say it was more fun than my B5 RS4
Hmmm interesting food for thought...

That V6 makes a fking awesome noise. Good look trying to find one though. Took me long enough to find a saloon. Very few around.

Could do this:

Very wild after a JZW remap!
True enough.

I've got a 2.5 V6 SW and I don't think I've seen a decent one of them for sale in a while.

Just bought a 3.0 H6 Outback just a little over your budget. 240bhp and a bomb proof engine. Quite a sleeper too. Failing that the S4 is a good shoot although they are getting rather old now.

Do all your homework on audisrs.com they are awesome cars but as with all cars they have their problems.
The biggest being boost leaks which can kill the turbos, and that is an engine out job.
if you're looking at spending up to 7k you should definitely go for an already K04 converted one as it will save a fortune and is much better performance than the original K03's.
Ideally you want to buy one from a long standing forum member

Interesting you don't want a FWD but are considering fast Audis. Doesn't the 4wd on these only work when the front is traction limited? ie in benign situations they are essentially FWD? Or am I talking out the wazoo?

...another vote for a 550i btw. smile

E500 is another good choice, perhaps a bit old man, but very Q.

Some of them have haldex (FWD most of the time, 4x4 when needed) but some are proper quattro (permanent 4x4), the B5 is quattro

Good thread. Temopted by a fast estate for lugging the DH bike around rather than racking a 360Z.

Interesting.

Is that also true of the B6/B7 S4?

All Quattro branded A4 platforms are Torsen.

Only A3 platform and below are Haldex.

This man obviously had impeccable taste. Jewish Racing Gold is officially the fastest colour too.
