The 335i is getting on a bit now. New generation of cars has moved the game on love it or hate it.
The 335i matches up to the competition at the level it is at. It's no sports car, but more than a match for its direct rival in the Audi S4/5. The 335i is a very capable car. The common phrase used through this thread is a car that ticks all the boxes. The 335i does that. All things considered it is a very good car. It's not an M4 or a car that is capable of slaying high end sports cars. Never will you hear me pretending otherwise.
I've never considered cars that reach 100mph in 12 seconds as super fast cars. Early 335i were doing that back in 2006 and I don't recall such a huge fuss.
Such a shame that they haven't progressed the performance with the F30. It's still only in the 12s. I find it odd that the diesel version is faster this time around and they've allowed the gap to the M car to increase.
I'm not sure why BMW have allowed the M235i to have more power and performance, then allow such a big gap between the 335i and the M. To me they've left a bit of a gap in the market now. The current 335i won't be as popular as the old one.

You are getting very boring now.
Maybe you should go and start that thread on your fking awesome 335i?
Ah, you are one of those ones. Click of your profile and the first posts that come up are having a go at BMW drivers and pro VW/Audi posts. When people do the opposite your response is "predictable". How ironic.Maybe you should go and start that thread on your fking awesome 335i?
If you read through this thread, I've posted a lot. You'll notice that people keep posting towards me expecting a response to it. It dies a death for a few days, then someone just wants to raise it again and not often for an obvious reason.
I feel no need to start a thread about the 335i as everyone knows what they are. As you might have read, I don't pretend it is anything awesome. If you also read the thread rather than attacking me, you'll also find it was others who brought the 335i into the thread and started the discussion.
Maybe offer something more exciting yourself than just having a go??

Just to illustrate how capable the R is..
with a quick trip to revo and nothing more than a software update the Golf will do 3.7 seconds to 60 and a 0-100MPH time of 9 seconds.
thats faster 0-100 than a 2012 Ferrari California 30 F1 4.3l V8 and AS quick as a Porsche Panamera Turbo 4.8 V8
thats also a second quicker than the A45 AMG, along with a £7000 saving and better ride.
thats the facts I'm bringing to the table to support my opinion that the golf is quite amazing considering the price, comfort and practicality
So, if you spend more money on it, it goes faster? Wow. Who'd have guessed?with a quick trip to revo and nothing more than a software update the Golf will do 3.7 seconds to 60 and a 0-100MPH time of 9 seconds.

In fairness I don't see a huge fuss in this thread relating to the Golf. The press have latched on to the fact that hot hatches have attained performance figures previously considered the domain of supercars. Of course things have moved on and Lancers & Imprezzas have been doing much the same for years but we now have "normal" looking derivatives of family cars rather than cars that look like race or rally cars which have been dubbed "supercar slayers" by some of the press. I don't think this hype is portrayed by Golf R owners nor believed quite frankly. My Golf R is faster than a Ferrari 308 I was lucky enough to drive in my youth. Even without the owner present I would doubt I could drive it as quickly as the Golf on a winding road. Do I think the Golf is anywhere near the experience of that Ferrari? Of course not. Do I think the Golf is a serious alternative to a modern supercar, or any of the classes above for that matter? No.
It is a very good multi purpose car, eminently practical, very refined, good fun and makes me feel good. Also in my youth I did some road rallying and getting from A to B as quickly as possible is in my view a world apart from an enjoyable B road blast so I don't really care too much about stop watch times or being at the limits; maybe not the right thing to say here.
The one piece of advice I would give though, is if you don't need a practical, refined multi purpose vehicle, the Golf doesn't really play the role of an out and out sports car in hatchback guise like some trackday special. Sure you can keep it permanently in Race mode and if you opt for DCC (as I did) have a firmer than standard ride, yet it still does the mundane bits so incredibly competently that it never feels like a sports car out of its preferred environment and thus it may play the normal Golf bit almost too well for some.

I'd wager that almost ANY car can achieve those figures with enough money thrown at them! I know of humble Mini's with well over 300bhp, hell, even a Fiat 500 can have that much, and both examples are much lighter than the Golf!
Tell me, what would the result be if the Porsche or Ferrari you mention are afforded the same upgrades? Also, what happens when you show the Golf a real corner, will its limitations be shown?
Or are you, like many others only interested is silly point and squirt situations to state your case? If that is so, then I know of a few 40 year old Capri's that embarrass your chipped Golf.

That's extremely ironic given this thread.Remember the days when DXB thought the 335d was super quick ignoring all facts and common sense? Remember the my car is faster than xyz, it can do this that and the next thing.
It is so much like this thread it isn't true.
Remember when DXB sold the 335d and bought a better car how his opinion changed greatly very quickly?
That'll be the people in this thread in 2 years time.
Why are you trying to stir things up with this line of comments? Are you trying to get a reaction for some reason?

You've been 'reacting' for the entire thread so no need.
Reacting to what? It hasn't been me throwing insults or making the childish comments. Spend two minutes looking at the people's profiles who are getting all edgy and they are guilty of dishing it out in other threads, yet can't take anything back. There is far too many sensitive souls in this thread that are so blind it is untrue.
We've went from this thread being the Golf is super fast. I pointed it has been beaten by less powerful other hatches on track. Suddenly that didn't matter and has been questioned if genuine(it is). It then went to the Golf can beat a whole host of cars in a list that included mostly very old cars, completely wrong times, or cars that weigh two tonnes and aren't considered that fast, then putting them in the sole condition that suits the R.
I had "lost" the argument based on a pile on nonsense and fabricated irrelevant times that were accepted as factual without question. After I pointed that out, we went to a mapped Golf R was faster than these other two heavyweights. The story had changed throughout the thread trying to ignore facts that don't suit.
I notice I don't get any answer when the question isn't going to have the answer the R boys would like to give,
Now we've ended that, it has just gone as low as making insults.
All I've pointed out is the R isn't as fast as people like to suggest it is. All the facts are there to show how fast it is, yet people are still making up "facts" to prove it is.
The only other thing I've said during the thread is that the R seems to appeal to too many aggressive young guys,or people who will buy VW and consider nothing other than VW. This thread and the other Golf threads read that way too.
It's odd that the S3 drivers are almost anonymous, get the R boys are really loud.
The thread has now long gone from the intended purpose and it is time to let go.

I have to agree with the last part of this post, I haven't seen one Golf R driver that isn't a knob as yet. Obviously there are some and I am generalising, but having such a capable car available on such a cheap lease has attracted a great deal of cocksockets. On the M25 two weeks ago and traffic was crawling, we were merging and up ahead there was a stationary lorry and a Golf R. As we got closer I noticed the bald tt in the Golf R had got out of his car and was giving the lorry driver a st storm of abuse, was telling him to get out of his cab while performing a warmup routine normally reserved for bare knuckle travellers, cracking knuckles and stretching! To top it off he was in his mid forties. This unfortunately demonstrates the demographic, whether fair or not. Those Revo times are impressive, you can't deny it, but considering the 0-60 time, the 60-100 is actually rather ste! Spend two minutes looking at the people's profiles who are getting all edgy and they are guilty of dishing it out in other threads, yet can't take anything back. £600 won't get you anywhere near the same 20% gains on the other cars.
And how does that £600 upgrade affect the £250 per month lease deal and insurance: If you do this, are you not breaking the lease agreement with the owners of the car? What happens if/when something lets go and a big repair bill is required?I am assuming many are leased/rented due to the sweet deals.

No idea and I suspect the manufacturer's warranty will be null and void also. The temptation will be too much to resist for some and when they realise (too late) just how fragile the turbo is on this car, it will all end in tears. The R can actually make 400hp, but not for long.
That's all well and good, but does it have the dynamics to handle 400bhp - or are we talking point and squirt drag racing?Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
