and me. VW Altrincham refused to look at it, saying they expected it to be a recall or at least a 'common fault' being designated, as they knew of at least 3 others. In the meantime, they said VW would be unlikely to pay out any (potentially extensive) investigation work so as much as that left my high and dry, they just shrugged their shoulders. VW Manchester didn't give anything additional, and VW themselves basically backed up the original dealer. Bunch of s. The car's great but that was a super st experience.
This is the one. Looks like my dealer is pretty good at listening to customer complaints!Re. VW refusing warranty claims if the car I'd driven guard from cold - no chance. The engines are driven hard AG the factory for QC. Plus, it's ny Mrs' car and she drives it mostly in ECO!

There's a 25 page thread on turbo failures on VWROC.co.uk (formerly rforum). Quite a few unhappy owners and simikar tales of useless and uncaring VW dealers.
Just having a little read, I can't help but see there is another thread about a guy being followed and then his car taken off him by armed thugs. How many times is that now?
The threads about stolen Golf R and hot Audis is more than concerning.

It was nowhere near as rife as it is now. It's happening a lot more these days.
I honestly don't think it is. I've been an active member of several VW forums for over a decade and have owned seven Golfs. Sure it appears to be rife at the moment, but we've been here before, albeit the means of stealing the cars are rather different. I remember half a dozen GTIs being stolen locally to me around 2008/2009.Pixelpeep7r said:
Reminds me of a conversation i had with my mates son when i had the Astra VXR..
Him: Yeh, these are well quick aint they, my mates got exactly the same one.
Me: Really? - yeh, it does seem rather rapid.
Him: Do you have the petrol or the diesel one?
me: What?
Him: Mates is diesel, which one is yours?
Me: --Slaps forehead--
What's wrong with that? The diesel version of the Astra VXR is the 888, although they are quite rare.Him: Yeh, these are well quick aint they, my mates got exactly the same one.

For the record, I think the Golf R is a great car however...
I can't help but wonder if the sudden increase in turbo failures is down to people obtaining the cars via cheap lease deals and therefore not caring for them as they would if it was a car they would likely have a longer term investment in.
A guy I was speaking to last week had had a Golf R whose turbo had let go after only a couple of thousand miles however admitted he never let the car get up to temperature before driving hard and offered it no hint of mechanical sympathy.

Ex-lease cars are going to devestated the reliability stats for 2nd cars, especially with cars like the R (high specific outputs; turbos; driven by enthusiastic but not terribly capable drivers )

Probably right. I can't help but wonder if the sudden increase in turbo failures is down to people obtaining the cars via cheap lease deals and therefore not caring for them as they would if it was a car they would likely have a longer term investment in.

One thing I also noticed (anecdotally though almost universally) is that the Golf Rs I've encountered on the road all are driven by utter cocksockets.

I have one of these on my dashcam still. A Golf R tearing past me on the M5, going to a TVR meet, and he/she was doing around 110-120. It then undertook a Clio (yeah, that showed 'em!) and drove like an absolute nutter until it disappeared from view. To be fair, there are inexperienced drivers like that no matter what the car - but this guy was driving as if it was his first fast car, and had to prove he was the fastest on the public roadOne thing I also noticed (anecdotally though almost universally) is that the Golf Rs I've encountered on the road all are driven by utter cocksockets.

Another reason I'm happy to perpetuate the myth of Alfa reliability. Nobody seems to nick them because they assume they won't start... How many times is that now?

Though I lubed the back calliper and the squeak has gone so now the only flaw I have is it's slightly dirty.

There is no diesel VXR.
The '888' model you refer to was the Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTi 888
Did you see VXR in that anywhere?

This is very true. My local area has quite a few "interesting" drivers who seem to have swapped their C63 AMGs for Golf Rs, and are driving them in a similar, hair-raising fashion.

I'm on my second Golf R - had new Mk7 for two months now so just run in and whilst I thought the previous model was great the new Mk7 is a step improvement. Few cars are faster in real world condition's on B roads due to its relatively small footprint and awesome grip. Powers through corners in the wet with amazing grip. Tyre choice seems to matter on the mk6 so suspect it does on the 7 as well.
mine is Golf 7 - blue with adaptive suspension and panoramic sunroof (keeps it light and airy).
