Its astonishing the amount of people here that have bought/leased these cars, and are then complaining about how dull it is and how cold it leaves them feeling.
Here's a clue, next time, try a test drive first.
That sounds like an outlandish approach to car buying/leasing . I think the hype got people queuing out the door for a product they didnt actually need. Here's a clue, next time, try a test drive first.
I think if you know, love and understand Golfs then you're not going to be disappointed. If you've got one very cheap and are moving from a much lower powered car then you're also not going to be disappointed, but if you've sucked up the hype and are moving from something interesting then I think the reality won't be so impressive.
I actually preferred my old MK5 GTI, and if I was to buy a petrol MK7 it would be a GTI with the Performance Pack.

8 months and 20k miles into my ownership with a pure white 3 door dsg, it cropped up on our company car scheme so is basically a fast work horse that goes out in all conditions. Firstly for those that find the drive to controlled or refined you are not pushing hard enough, I have had a few 4 wheel drifts and back end twitch moments that left me wishing I had worn my brown underpants that day.
Good points, will see most things away from the lights, roundabouts, twisty roads and will pull strongly on motorways. Bad points, not exciting enough to look at, windscreen already replaced due to the smallest tap in the world, brake pedal still clunky on release despite 2 days in VW for replacement, £860.00 per corner for a standard alloy (found out thanks to meeting a pot hole at 60mph).

£860 for one alloy? seriously?Good points, will see most things away from the lights, roundabouts, twisty roads and will pull strongly on motorways. That said one commute in and I'm already keen to explore how you deactivate the sound thing and the 'lift the wiper' bodge sounds appealing. Is there a more detailed guide to this anywhere? Thanks in advance, etc...
Here you go. http://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/7297-sound-actua...Has anyone out there actually spent their own money on one? (who isn't on a 2-3 year lease/PCP churn)
I get why you would lease one if you're on a company car allowance or similar but surely if you were spending your own actual cash, rather than splashing £35k on an optioned up R you'd go for the just as competent but slower lightly used 'normal' Golf and spend the remaining £15 - £20k on something kind of interesting and fun?
Or is it all about blowing away the diesel repmobiles on a wet day as a couple of posters have intimated...?

VW's new ad campaign right there!
To be fair, that is precisely why so many people buy them, because they are indeed consummate all rounders. No one has ever suggested a Golf is an Exige through the corners or an M5 in a straight line. It's only the well seasoned VAG haters that try and make them out to be more than they are, just so they can bash them down again.
It's also amusing how a rival car's flaws suddenly become 'drama', 'fun' and 'soul' when it comes to making a comparison to a 'safe and boring' Golf

If you had to have one car :
For a daily
Bit of fun at the weekend but you don't do track days
Impress the neighbours
Can play with Porsche's and other sub exotics
Blast the diesel rep into the weeds
Suits a push-on driving style
Safe in bad weather inc snow
Trips to the dump
School run
Pick up the mother in law in comfort and has 5 doors
Go to a mates wedding and arrive in style
Go to a school reunion and look successful ( shallow I know but we would all do it )
Not to expensive to run
Will keep its value well
Looks good on the driveway
Has tuning potential
Has a positive image
Well the Golf 7R does all of these in one package, any extremes of the above list and you need a second car.
I have a Mk6R and it does all of these things withe ease.
I am waiting on the Golf 7R Estate before I upgrade.
Arrive at a wedding in style and look successful at a school reunion?? Impress the neighbours. Mate, I think you would enjoy life a bit better if you thought a bit less of what you think other people MIGHT think.
As everybody knows, you can get all sorts of fast hatches (R inc) on cheap lease deals and nobody will look twice unless they know its an R. so those who know what it is know its cheap and will admire it for what it is, a very capable hatch, those that don't will just assume its a 2L diesel like the rest, which isn't a bad thing. I am not trying to slate the Golf, I just find your reseaning promoting it bizarre!

I've not got a Golf R, but most people only have one car and need it to do everything. £15k doesn't buy you much of a Golf these days, so you are looking at an older one with with no warranty and likely be needing odd and ends done.
Fair enough you can buy a lot of interesting cars for £15k, but many of the interesting cars also come with high running costs or be very compromised as a real world car.
Then if the other half also has a car then you've not always got space for a third car on the drive, or many people are living in congested areas where parking is very limited.
There is multiple reasons why people need to buy a car that covers most bases. You're never going to get a hatch handling like a Caterham, but you're never going to get the kids and luggage in a Caterham.
Some people are happy and have the facilities to have two cars of their own or three in their household, but many people need a car that can do a bit of everything.
Hot Hatches do exactly that. Good performance, practical and reasonable running costs.
Kind of a bit like Iphones arent they, fairly expensive but available at a reasonable monthly cost, they do everything very well but the owners sometimes manage to wind people going on about how they are the best, conversely those who dont own/dont want/cant afford either sometimes work themselves into an anti fanboy lather but would secretly love one, or at least enjoy it more than they would admit.
I would quite like a Golf R, I am tempted but I am not sure I would enjoy it more than my 350Z despite it being a bit quicker, grippier, better on juice, nicer inside and more practical.
Will wait for the Mustang and Focus RS

The iphone analogy works because it has the hype but, imho (in both cases) there are better products out there, for me at least.
Not sure about the "anti fan boy" stuff though, I think everyone is just calling it as they see it, be boring if we all liked the same thing.

Yeah, definitely better stuff out there, but those two items cited do a very good job, however it does really irk people when the owners crow about them ad-nauseum and declare them as the only valid choice, especially when it is from someone with more enthusiasm than experience or knowledge. Not sure about the "anti fan boy" stuff though, I think everyone is just calling it as they see it, be boring if we all liked the same thing.
I do like VW's I will admit that. But what is there out there for the money. Its the new 135i on the block and that's no bad thing. I can see why some people find the Golf a bit bland because it is a safe bet. But its enjoyable, practical and easy on the pocket. I'm honestly interested to know what other cars people would rather have. Megane is obvious choice but ride, interior quality and depreciation doesn't make it a daily contender for me. My 335i ticked most boxes but it wasn't great on broads as ride too firm.

'Owners' is a loose term.Matthew Clarke said:

I don't think you can now put a Megane in the same class as the R. Having a quick look on Autotrader they are selling about £10k more! Nearly new. I would expect better quality plastics, leather, dash etc for that money. In terms of depreciation, I think if the R was financed and fully paid for, the actual money lost when sold, not the percentage may not be far off the Megane.Regardless of their capabilities, I would not buy one, they look too much like the bog standard Golf.
Anyway let's wait and see what PH think about it. I have a strange feeling I know already.
I'm no fan of current BMWs, but who in their right mind would choose a 4-pot front-biased Haldex Golf over a RWD BMW with a straight six? Anyone who buys this over the 135i needs their head examined... At the end of the day, no matter how fast its 0-62 time is, it's just a 2-litre mostly-front-drive Golf just like any other, nothing special, in fact it's so dull that I just zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... oh, and 35 grand for a Golf? Someone's having a laugh! At least the old Mk5 had a burbly VR6 to make it vaguely interesting...
