RE: Shed Of The Week: Saab 9000
Discussion
They are truly great cars, I had a 2.3 CSE LPT, and had it remapped to 240 bhp (260 lbft) and a set of Koni adjusatbles on it to help the old boat round the twisties. It was genuinely quick in a straight line, 3rd gear would take you from 30/40 mph onwards to almost 100mph. Without having to change gear there weren't many cars on the road that would keep up with it, I fondly remember once pulling a few cars lengths on an Integra Tye R coming off a dual carriageway roundabout, I don't think he expected it at all!
Shame this one is a poverty spec with steel wheels, velour trim and walnut missing from the dash. It does have a certain charm to it and will surely last for many years to come in its under-stressed form.

How true:
Actually, GM began the careful and painstaking process of turning a quality company into a rubbish one some 11 years earlier, in 1989, when it took a 50 per cent share in Saab
I had one in the US for about 6 months, between an Explorer and a Dodge Intrepid. it felt a world away. It was well built and even though front wheel drive was fun to drive as well.
I worked in a commercial quarry and as with all rental cars it would have been rude not to thrash the wheels off it around the quarry roads. Never had any problems with it unlike the other two.
Just a real shame GM screwed Saab.

Wot he said. I like these, but there's far better options out there, even for shed money. Just sayin'

Not a fan of the spec, but the more poverty versions are still fun to drive. Once had a very used 2.0 non turbo auto with velous seats as a discourtesy carnand it was strangely likeable.
About 4 years ago I bought a 2.3T Anniversary - 200bhp, full leather/suede interior, climate control, heated seats, sensible miles, the only problem being lost synchro on 2nd. It lapped up the miles for 3 years without hesitation and has only been less reliable recently with less use.
It cost £750.
Brilliant cars.

something as mad as this
Err, what in the name of all that's holy is that? Looks like two transversely-mounted two-stroke three-cylinders, in line with each other, somehow geared and pulley'd together to give a longitudinal output? Engineers, SAABheads - explain, please?http://saabmuseum.com/en/saab-model/the-monster/

I had a 2.3 Turbo a while back and never liked it. My wife though adored the car, the best seats of anything she's sat in before or since.
For me though it felt barge-like.
UNTIL! I replaced the Saab with a Volvo C70 T5 which I loved. The 9000 though hadn't been sold - and when I got some interest a few weeks later it needed an MoT.
Getting back into the Saab after a month or two with the Volvo, a very quick car, and it felt spectacular, very, very quick indeed - Yes it was a big old bus but a bit of distance and most of my issues with it evaporated

It would really help if someone could explain the mechanical disposition, what all those longitudinal pulleys do to those transverse engines, how the output gets turned, etc...The car enthusiast in me cannot help like this. Does it make sense? Not a lot, not even for a grand. But...
But: they're few on our roads. They're pretty good cars. The brand is leftfield (I'm nothing if not there). There's a great deal of satisfaction to be had driving (what I take to be) a well looked after, older car.
I may not be inclined to make an offer, but I like it. I do.
