I am pretty sure you can push for a cash offer which avoids the cat d status, I am also 99% sure you cant get cat d off once its on ... no matter how hard you try.
...and it sounds like it's already on there.

I'd still be taking the cash and keeping the car.
When my MR2 was rear ended, I got cash in lieu of repairs and it didn't get a cat marker.

Definitely worth holding onto and repairing as looks like a nice one. 20% of the market value has to be less than its worth in parts surely?

Don't think they can put it on whilst you still own the car and they haven't given you the cash for it .... again I may be wrong !!

My ATR was marked as Cat C by my insurance company the day after it was assessed by the repair agent!

Nothing I could do to stop it as it was written off on safety grounds due to the cost of the repair, the damage was cosmetic and due to the price of panels etc exceeded the cars value by some margin!

So nothing to do with "safety grounds". CatC is purely "Repairs > Value". If safety grounds were invoked, it would have been CatB.

It's either a safety or a financial consideration. If a car is so badly damaged it wouldn't be feasible to safely repair it then it gets a Cat A/B. If is written off purely due to the cost of repair vs the cars value it gets a Cat C/D

I probably wouldn't have stopped. Would have been good to see the old bd smash their car on it. Hope you get a good payout.
confused If the OP hadn't stopped he would have smashed his own car into it.

Just to put this one to bed, I received my payout yesterday based on a value of £10k, (£8k cash minus £2k salvage retention). Happy with that!

Sounds like a good result. Are you keeping and repairing it?

I think the salvage retention means the insurance company are keeping it and the only way to get it back is to have a bid on the salvage company's website.

He would've got £8k if he chose to get the car back.

Happy to be corrected smile

He's clearly stated that he got £8k, and that the car's insurance valuation was £10k. Since he has kept the salvage, the insurance company has subtracted the salvage value (2k) from the payout. 10k-2k=8k.

I misread the minus for a plus.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to turn it into a track day car, minimal damage, get it bodged back into position or apply a universal adjuster to the floorpan and then gut it, sell the interior and off ya go! biggrin

I kept it, so I've got £8k in the bank and I've priced up a repair at £1k using second hand parts. It's already booked in at the local bodyshop. It's now on a Cat D ... ah well.

To be honest though, I've got a hankering for a Cayman S or 997 2s so I may well repair and shift on!

Get lots of pictures of the damage and the repair as they go, im, sure it will help get the best value from it if/when you sell it on.

I would be happy to buy a Cat C or D if I could see the repair work in detail personally. Glad such a nice example isn't being scuppered!

You could have sold it on Ebay as a repairable write off. I'm sure you would sell it for far more than £2k, thus giving you much more than £10k in the bank.

Not the same, but I had an e46 coupe a couple of years ago (paid £3k for it). Bint drove into the side and it was a cat C. I argued over the valuation and got it up to £3k minus retention (I wanted the wheels). I sold it on for £800, giving me a total of £3,300 on a car I paid less for 18 months prior to the accident.
