Can't actually believe there are people supposedly interested in cars that dislike the look of a Ferrari F40. There is one at a supercar garage near my work and seeing it in the flesh I can confirm it is the best looking car ever built. The only slightly negative thing I can say about it is hearing it drive slowly down a lane past my work on minimal throttle; before seeing it you could mistake it for a nova with a very large back box.
I do understand the 'kit car' fit, finish and interior criticisms. However it's one of my favourite cars of all time, and always will be. To me the design is about as perfect as cars get.

The F40 is a great looking car but it's not even close to the best looking car ever made. For one the GT40 is way better looking.

That really surprises me as you seem to be really into cars, so you would rather have a noisy unrefined diesel engine over a petrol V8 engine with around 560bhp? I appreciate what you are saying about the weight of a M5 as it is a serious barge but it still goes like the clappers for its weight.

A 535d isn't exactly featherweight either.
Do you actually think that a 535d is noisy and unrefined?

Some peoples thoughts of what a 'revered drivers car' are vastly different than what I thought the term meant. I was thinking more of the list in EVO a few years back. Some of the cars mentioned on this thread seem to be 'revered commuting/family wagons'

EVOs list if you have never seen it.

I've had and driven many variants of the x35d and think the drivetrain is exceptionally good - but relative to an M5 it is certainly unrefined. I wouldn't say noisy as its quieter.

I've seen first hand how quick the E90 M3's are on track but have also heard them being revved, and it must be one of the worst sounding V8's.
The E90 M3 is perhaps the one M3 I'd consider as being really dump. Although whatever the new M3/M4 is, I'm not wild about that either. The E90 M3 missed the point for me. Uninspiring engine, bloated and blobby looks, too heavy and fat to be really sporty but with a miniscule tank range so pretty dreadful as a GT too (which is what M3's seem to have become over the years).

I have only got experience of the same engine in the 640d and it is noisy from outside and its also unrefined at very lows revs from inside and it struggles to hide the fact its an oil burner, but it does offer strong performance/good economy though but at the price of refinement.

Given the choice a petrol would always be the preference all day long but with us covering 30k to 40k miles a year its maybe worth the compromise to go diesel.

I really don't get any convertible. It's just a lot of extra wind noise. I've tried to like them, driven MX5's etc but I like my reassuring box. For out of the box there are Motor Bikes.

I appreciate how good a 535d is as an all-round package but with the exception of fuel consumption its frankly ludicrous to think that its in any way objectively better than an M5.
Couldn't agree more! thumbup

A diesel is only ever purchased as a tool to do a job and surely they are only ever purchased with the head because if you purchase with the heart a petrol would win the day without question.

A 535d is for the tight gits and the M5 is for those who want to enjoy life to the full! driving

I'm fortunate enough to have driven both, and for a while, quite regularly. An average Joe going from A-B will get there quicker in a 535D, and will be a lot more relaxed when they arrive. And richer of course.
An interesting assessment for sure. What generation 535d and M5 is your experience based on?

See, I can't see why anyone WOULDNT have one unless they need a minivan or only do terribly uninspiring driving or something. I mean on a nice day, driving through the countryside to work or to lunch, its always better with the roof down. Even if its cold out, these days heaters and heated seats are so good if its sunny it doesnt matter. A little chassis flex (who drives at the limits of a modern car on the road?) is absolutely worth the 10x engagement top down motoring gives you.

I'm not much up on the different versions, as neither of them were mine, but the 535D was a 08 plate car and the M5 a 55 plate, from memory.

I love the look of convertibles but the wind just kills it for me.

I don't think many cars look better as convertibles. I've been in a few and not sure what the fuss is all about.
