I can only assume at some point you've got completely the wrong end of the stick, or are maybe posting on the wrong thread by mistake? Nobody on this thread has boasted about anything as far as I can see, and there hasn't been any discussion on who's the bigger enthusiast.

Edited by RobM77 on Thursday 16th April 13:19
It's been mentioned a few times.
Really? If it has then I've completely missed it, sorry.

Also, what's this about me being boastful? I may have missed other people's posts, but as far as I know I write all my own posts and I've not bragged about anything on this thread, not even in the slightest.

I never said you were but you took umbrage at my post which supprised me, given that I wasn't really saying anything especially contraversial.

Yes you did - it's quoted above and I've put it in bold now so you can see it.

Even if they did, it would be massively socially unacceptable to say so. They aren't for everybody, we aren't all the same. As you pointed out above, some people have different priorities in life.
Socially unacceptable to say that you wish you'd never had your kids. I agree it is, probably because people who think like that tend to be sociopaths...biggrin
Sociopaths lack empathy. You know, the ability to understand others who have different thoughts and feelings to oneself wink

As someone who tracks periodically and have just averagely competent skills, what the experience has taught me is to look at the skill of the driver, not the capability of the car.

Of course, a very skilled driver will get more out of a great car, but for people like me, I am well aware that various cars I drive or have driven have capabilities I will never really be able to try at the limit. I had a couple of amazing passenger laps at the Nurburgring years ago with a very experienced guy, in an unmodified Mazda Miata apart from a roll cage. He got everything out of that car - everything.

There are cars I personally do not get, and to be completely honest it is neither jealousy nor experience.
For example, modern Ferraris have never really appealed to me and yet I have never driven one. Modern Astons are also in that category and I have driven a few. its just a subjective take and really does not have any bearing on the objective capabilities of the car.

Used to drive BMW M cars, and got away from that after the E63, now have found a good place to be with Porsches, but not everyone gets them also. I think the good news is that there is a wealth of choice at multiple levels these days. I would have fancied a Focus RS but they are not available this side of the pond and none of the hot hatches make it over here, sadly.

The used market is just amazing these day also.

There are people into cars who are just like this as well, people who's love of cars has caused relationships to fail, people who have modest incomes but put every single penny into being able to afford a Ferrari or an Aston. The guy who has bits of dismantled cars on his kitchen worktop and is incapable of having a conversation for more than 5 minutes about any subject other than his passion, the guy who has compromised every single other aspect of his life just to get behind the wheel of a certain car. Now these are the proper virgins, the rest of us are just amatuers...

laugh
fk that! I'll stick to not being a proper enthusiast I think.

I'm not trolling at all and I believe everything i've written.
As far as this thread is concerned, I think you're barking up the wrong tree. I didn't think anyone was boasting or making it a competition?

It seems to me it was just a discussion around supersaloons versus their non-super diesel relatives, and whether people want multiple cars. confused

Jesus, it's nearly enough to make me pine for the discussion about the F40's panel gaps. biggrin

Interesting to read the comments re the F40 - for many this is the car that defined an era, a no compromise road racer , but I get that for some it was a cynical marketing attempt by Ferrari to sell a car with the absolute highest profit margins in a time of rampant speculation.

What I will say is that it looks absolutely stunning in the flesh - yes the panel gaps are horrendous but also the case for all Ferrari's produced in that era. The bigger issue for me is the horrific green mastic sealant that is used all over the car but particularly noticeable in the cabin.

The car puts down the power like no other - it really is an amazingly thrilling car if not just a little scary, get it sideways at all as the turbos spool up and it will put you in a hedge.

But it's interesting that, despite (as mentioned previously) it being the ultimate supercar for a lot of folk - they tend to change hands fairly often - for a lot of people it's a scratch that needs to be itched....

Re the 288 GTO - a sublimely pretty car but ultimately more dangerous even than the F40 - less downforce and skinny tyres (and a good deal more comfortable interior = less of an occasion = potential to underestimate the package) plus pretty much the same power source.

F50 is probably the best of the lot - fantastic engine/better finish - but nowhere near as iconic a design.
i'm not a major fan of the F40 (but could become so if i drove one!), but i have to recognise it's status in history. Today with P1s, 458s & 918s (and their highly competent but 'lesser' siblings) we're spoilt for choice. The F40 was a little surreal for a road car in the late 80s. A comparative road test wasn't even possible.
In that context, the panel gaps are just part of the deal, the history and even charm. Especially as the massive hood lifts up by 90deg!

I love the look of convertibles but the wind just kills it for me.
Which ones have you been driving? My mk1 mx5 can just about handle motorway stints with the roof and windows down, and it's far from the last word in comfort and refinement. Anything vaguely modern with a good heater and a wind deflector would be more than manageable surely?
I've driven MX5's and they go alright but only as a toy could it make any sense. Wind noise, temperature and people all looking at you when you pull up at the lights. No I will take my box and keep my bouts of fresh air to a good walk.

Don't write off convertibles purely based on MX5s - SLK 55 AMGs go well and cosset properly with the roof down, as do jag XK convertibles.

Your points are valid for the MX5, but as said previously it's far from the last word in convertible refinement so don't let it put you off the concept of convertibles in general if you like the idea of them otherwise smile

Sorry, I meant the royal "you".

I also probably looked a bit silly in my MX5 with the top down. Still fantastic though, do miss that part of owning it frown

Geting back on track, the car that is revered that I never gelled with was my M3 CSL. I liked the idea, but it never really lived up to my expectations.

Mine was totally standard, but it was still incredibly noisy and at the same time, not that quick. The trick bits on the car made it feel very special, but the power deliver and the handling never felt like BMW's GT3 as many have made parallels with.

I guess I should have tracked it and I now regret I didn't, but in the couple of years I had it I always felt that it hadn't delivered on the promise.
