I used to work in an Audi/VW dealership selling VWs and if I could have a pound for every time someone bought an A3 over a Golf "because it's an Audi", not because it's a vastly better product and certainly not better value (back then anyway)!
Don't get me started on this hehe

Me: you know that Golf R I ordered 7 months ago which I don't really need any more, I've been thinking, it would be ideal for your running around duties
Mrs: want Audi
Me: they're considerably more expensive for less car
Mrs: want this one [A3 1.6TDI or whatever else you can lease for ~£200/month]
Me: banghead and repeat

Sorry the Panamera and the Rapide and their ilk are a complete waste of time and if they were made in China you wouldn't be looking twice at them.

Once again it is one car trying to be the jack of all trades when you are better off buying two cars better for what you need.

As I said earlier, an aim of mine was to own a Porsche by the time I was 30 (sadly this didn't happen).

By that logic every single practical performance car is a complete waste of time. Are hot hatches just as pointless?

Caterhams, Westfields and everything of that ilk.

Just never appealed to me whatsoever. I'm sure they're fun but they don't look great and are an awful prospect unless you actually want to be on it which isn't very often lets face it.

You could obviously take them on a track which is fine but I'd much rather have a normal sportscar instead.

I can see what you're saying, but they do have a wonderful intimacy in their controls that even an Elise can't get close to. Even driving a 7 at modest speeds on public roads is a pretty special experience, although yes, it's on the track where they truly come alive.

Thanks, that is pretty cheap! Sadly, I have two small kids now, so need space for two child seats and all their paraphenalia and an additional vehicle wouldn`t be an option. What I need is a diesel Panamera, haha

I guess I could put one in each boot to stop them from squabbling!

Disclaimer: I love my kids and would rather have them than a Porsche most days.

Not really getting all the performance saloon bashing, seems to be a lot of snobbery and no taking into account different people like different things, I happen to like fast saloons nothing to do with family kids etc.

When I was 21 with no kids I didn't drive a Nova GTE I drove a Cavalier SRI 130 and have continued that way with Evo's, M5's etc. and the odd exception like a 306 Gti-6, not sure that makes me less of a petrol head not everyone likes sports cars.

For all the time I have had my license if someone had offered me a 911 or a super saloon to be my only car I would have drove away in the saloon every time and nothing's changed.

I know the looks are debatable but something like a Panamera's right up my street smile

Simple question - why? Why a 2 ton saloon with seats you don't need rather than a 1200kg sports car with the same engine and a more responsive drive, more steering feel, etc etc

I can give you a simple answer.

An M5 or E63 etc. has always given me a semi, a 911 has always left me completely flaccid.

An E9x M3 is a prime example, it would always have to be the saloon for me even if I had no family.

Not always the case, especially with BMW.

I'm pretty smitten these days by modern 911's, I used to think they were bland until I had a spin in one. The amount of guys not getting Caterhams is surprising me, they really are something different and you don't need more than 200Hp to really enjoy yourself in one. Having said that the noise of the E9x M3's is just dirty, I adore them despite their thirst and slightly fragile nature.

Sevens are joyous at all times and all speeds and I have never driven anything over which you have such control of the back axle.

You don't need a track for a Caterham to shine-get a moderately powered one with skinny rear tyres and you can push it hard on the road and remain legal(ish)-truly great fun!

The thing is every car is a compromise to some extent and I'm talking about owning one car here.

To ORD who drives a Cayman he can't understand why I would prefer a big saloon car due to weight etc. which I get. There will be some other bloke who drives an Elise who is baffled at someone driving a bloated Porsche.

We all strike a balance somewhere and super saloons are where it is struck best for me.

yes My Roadsport VVC had the plastic Avons on it and loads of torque low down. It is truly amazing how you can steer the rear with the throttle but in complete safety - anyone who's never driven a 7 would think I'm a nutter for suggesting that, but they really are unique! Even on track at 80mph+, oversteer is as instinctive as in a go kart.

I am also pretty surprised at the lack of love for a Caterham, I have only driven a 140bhp model on the road and I loved every minute of it but don't get me wrong if I was to buy one I would go for a more powerful version but that's just me.

Regards the E9x M3 all I can say is if you actually use one day to day you might be surprised just how really disappointing they are to drive.

I've driven one Caterham. It was on a track and it was a disaster. Understeered for England and was wholly shown up by the Renault Sport Spider I drove straight afterwards.
I fully believe that the example I drove was tired and the tyres it wore on the front were totally wrecked.
I'd still have the Renault. That's just me.

Totally agree-An R500 or 620R is no doubt very quick and fast on track but a simpler Seven is probably the more fun, useable road car as you can really use its engine and chassis performance at all times. They really will happily oversteer at 30mph on the road in complete safety.

Of course, the dash plastics are not up to Audi standards...;)

There's a difference between "getting" a car and "wanting to own" it.

I've driven a few Caterhams and "get" the whole thing. I can see why people rave about them because they're the purest driving experience you'll ever get. Ask me if I'd own one, no sorry. Too impractical so if I did have one it would end up doing about 500 miles a year which would be a waste of a great car.

On the other hand, a Golf Gti would do most of what I need a car for but I don't get them because I don't feel that "specialness" that everyone else apparently feels when they drive one. For that reason, I wouldn't want to own one either though. I'd be paying extra for something of no benefit.
