Thereby demonstrating that the "seems a bit pointless" bit was sound in both theory and practical application.

There's a 40mph dual carriageway section near me with a roundabout at both ends, along with PeLiCon crossings, with further traffic lights and roundabouts a short distance away. I'm regularly passed (me at an indicated 43/44mph) by tools who "weren't going to plod down this road" behind me. Quite often I roll up at the roundabout directly behind them, and regularly end up passing them as they are queuing for the busier exit while I can roll up to the line in the lane 2/right turn exit.

Pointless morons, pointlessly making the daily journey to work more dangerous and less efficient for everyone. So how does "having the more powerful car" work out for you on busy commutes? wink

Pelican crossings. These are signal-controlled crossings where flashing amber follows the red ‘Stop’ light. You MUST stop when the red light shows. When the amber light is flashing, you MUST give way to any pedestrians on the crossing. If the amber light is flashing and there are no pedestrians on the crossing, you may proceed with caution.
Laws ZPPPCRGD regs 23 & 26 & RTRA sect 25(5)

As I'm fairly old and I've only ever seen them called "Pelican" I'm going with someone didn't understand that you can have just "a name" for something without it being an acronym and decided to make up a sort of acronym that isn't actually a word

And based on a quick google, that person may be you!

To the OAP driving the Black Corsa this afternoon,

If I had my way you'd be banned from driving until you can satisfactory resit a driving test. You are an utterly useless and incompetent driver. Putting the fact that you are unable to keep the vehicle within the lane to one side, your complete and utter failure to maintain an adequate speed with the traffic flow was appalling.

I had the misfortune of being behind you for several miles today and my usual journey home took an extra 15 minutes longer due to your incompetence and complete lack of ability to maintain traffic flow. See those things at the side of the road with numbers on them? Yes, that's called a "speed limit" - it means you should (ideally) aim to travel at that particular speed. The speed limits we encountered today where 30 and 40. NOT 15 and 20.

Some observations; Notice how when you're in stopped traffic, then move off and the several cars in front of you rapidly move off into the distance, leaving you behind? Yeah, that's because you're not going fast enough. 15 MPH in a 30 zone is NOT FAST ENOUGH. Now, look in your mirror, see the 8+ cars who are queued behind you, looking angry and wishing you would f*** off? Yeah, that's because you're not going fast enough - have you noticed the reoccurring theme here? YOU AREN'T GOING FAST ENOUGH.

Notice how you always seem to end up stuck at red lights? YOU AREN'T GOING FAST ENOUGH. Your sheer inability to drive at a progressive speed literally caused yourself, myself and the now growing queue of cars behind to have to stop at every single f****** light! Why? YOU AREN'T GOING FAST ENOUGH AS YOU CRAWL BETWEEN THE VARIOUS SETS OF LIGHTS at 15 MPH. Had you been going at a reasonable speed (or anything above 15 MPH for that matter) then you'd actually make progress through green lights - instead as you potter down the road you inevitably end up with the light on red.

Do the world a favour and apply for your bus pass.

He probably realised you were one of those plebs who says "yourself" and "myself" when they mean "you" and "me" but think it makes you sound educated or something. He probably also thought that you say "could of" for the same reason and therefore enjoyed the little fun he had with you.

Fair play to him, I say.

PS, it's a limit not a target.

That's exactly the attitude I'm calling knobbish. I'm more important than this guy behind me who thinks he's more important.

Thing is, the only person claiming superiority is the guy in front. The guy behind is just trying to get his daughter to dance class on time after dropping his son at football.

He really doesn't give 2 sts about you either way. So please, speed up or move over knob!
Really, you sound very important to me wink

Idiots on the M25 ignoring the red X lane closure sign, causing chaos and an hour delay for everyone else. A special place in hell is reserved for those who deliberately move into the lanes with a white arrow to designate an upcoming lane closure, then charge right down to the cones, ignoring the red cross, just to get a few minutes jump on everyone else.

There should have been a police car pulling them (or at least snapping photos of them to fine them later).
1. How do you know that their action caused an hour's delay? Can you demonstrate that?

2. It's called "merge in turn". It works very well if people are sensible. There is no need to form a single line of traffic from five miles back.

HTH.
Yes, the white arrow is telling you to merge into the next lane, not join it to speed past other traffic. The red cross means you should not be in this lane.

Using the white arrow as an instruction to do the f***ing opposite of what it's meant is the very definition of not being sensible but being a knob.

I vehemently disagree with the points you make and feel it necessary to raise the contrary opinion in a marginally sarcastic if not condescending manner.

It was a total cluster !?*k on Sunday too, I've kept well clear today.

Talking of the new A1 in Gateshead, why can't people move over to the new inner lane!?!? Honestly, sheep the lot of them.

Unfortunately, for impatient people like you, the driver of the black Corsa was perfectly within his rights.
Not everybody drives to get to a destination as soon as possible. Some people just like to go for a 'drive'. When they do this there is no specific destination, just the enjoyment of driving and looking at the scenery!
Those things at the side of the road with numbers on them? They are called speed limit signs but you seem to regard them as speed target signs! Sorry to tell you this but you are wrong!
Best advice for you is to allow more time for your journeys or try and appreciate the world around you a little more!
You took the post right out of my mouth. Agree entirely.

PLUS: The driver concerned passed his test many decades ago Do you think he's concerned?. 'Slow' drvers have always been a fact of motoring life, it happens on every journey be it MW DC A road or country lane and to complain that it cost you 15 minutes is fatuous in the extreme.

You have to go with it until you can OT or the driver in front turns off.

Huffing and puffing serves no purpose, only to highlight poor driving skills and an impatient attitude.

Let's all S.dab.

you'll fail your driving test if you hold other traffic up at below the speed limit, hesitate at junctions, make someone else break unnecessarily or act in a way so as to not make normal and effective progress. You CANNOT go as slow as you like. The road isn't a fking personal bowling green, it's a road and there are thousands of people who need to get around. There are signs in scotland telling people to cede to faster traffic because obstructing and creating frustration causes accidents. It IS NOT in the old fart's gift to do 15mph. This IS NOT his right. Why the fk do many of you not understand? This is not a "i'm more important" argument, it's the rules of the road. PHers should know better.

What makes the slow driver so important that he gets to dictate the speed for everyone else? You'd be pretty put out if someone told you to drive faster than you wanted to, so why is it fine for someone to force people to drive inappropriately slowly?

Interesting link (apologies it's Daily Fail): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2016721/Sl...

143 accidents per year directly caused by slow driving.

Without creating a slinging match. Those horrible bright strobe lights some cyclists have make me think knob, it's like having somebody flash their full beams in your face. Especially when they pop themselves in front at lights and place themselves right in front of the drivers side of the car making me blind. I'm temped to start flashing my rear fog light once past, but that might irritate the already blinded driver behind.

Just to add, although I admittedly find it bloody irritating I don't have an issue with cyclists going to the front of the queue, I do find issue when they have these blinding lights.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Scrolling down on the very search you linked to reveals this little gem... http://www.lbc.co.uk/why-is-a-pelican-crossing-so-...

The LBC article said:
Question

Pelican crossing, puffin, crossing, toucan crossing… why are they named after sea birds? I understand zebra crossing, but not the others.
Jack, Waterloo

Answer

** Definitive **
Name: Kevin, Tooting
Qualification: I can cross the road
Answer: The first was a Pelican crossing, which stands for Pedestrian light controlled crossing and was named a Pelican for ease. A puffin crossing is a Pedestrian User-Friendly crossing, while a Toucan crossing is one where two can cross, pedestrian or cyclist.
Quite clearly I am not the only one who knows the origin of the name. Think about it just for one second. There has to be some reason why a thing gets the name it gets. Why not an acronym simplified, or more likely misheard/misunderstood? I'll bet it makes more sense than any alternative theory you managed to dredge up...

wink

Feck it. The top result was for the Wikipedia entry. And whilst that isn't Gospel, you can have that one too... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelican_crossing ...and the quote, before you rush off to edit it out...

Wikipedia Pelican Crossing entry said:
A pelican crossing (previously Pelicon Crossing – PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled Crossing) is a type of pedestrian crossing, which features a pair of poles each with a standard set of traffic lights facing oncoming traffic, a push button and two illuminated, coloured pictograms facing the pedestrian from across the road...

...The name is derived from PELICON, a portmanteau of pedestrian light controlled. The term pelican crossing originated in the United Kingdom, but similar traffic control devices are in use throughout the world. The term is also used in the Republic of Ireland...
Here endeth the lesson...
