It's rather ironic but IMO DRLs are the biggest cause of people not using their lights at night. Even worse now that many dashboards light up.
I see this all the time, even cars in pitch blackness who must wonder why their headlights are so sh*t.

Why....just why....if we have to have DRLs, can't the rear lights have a permanent red LED showing?

Now if the dozy gits with their rear foglights on can just look at the tail lights ahead to check if they need to be on at all, we're done.
I coded the rear lights on my Golf to be on all the time same as the DRL's.

I fiddle with the lights and often have them in sidelights only so sometimes they're not on Auto mode for when the wife gets in the car. She doesn't realise and drives around on DRL only. The amount of times I tried to tell her to check the lights but she's hopeless at it. Coding them on seemed the safest thing to do.
or just leave them in automatic and then no-one has to do anything? Unless it's foggy of course.

That's exactly why Loafer nominated himself a few posts ago.

Not driving his usual car, was in his wife's, & didn't think of turning them on until he got flashed because they work automatically.

As we seem to be in for this fog etc for a few days, I set my headlights to work whenever my engine is running.

F**king fog lights today.... it was a tiny big foggy. But every other car had their fog lights on despite being able to clearly see normal rear lights 200m ahead. Seriously knobbers, you don't need fog lights unless you can't see very far.
Compounded by the problem that newer LED fog lights seem to burn your retinas.

Drivers, such as this delight from Autoglass, who remain oblivious to the fact that while their shiny bright DRL LEDs are blinding everyone ahead of them, their tail lights are not on.

... And then me, for sending the image to Autoglass themselves.

(screen shot from dashcam, not phone-at-wheel!)

I saw a woman driving one of these transits the other day, she was craining her head right over the steering wheel, face nearly on the glass because she had DRL only, I flashed her about 10 times but she was so obvious I just carried on

Fail to see how DRLs are 'dazzling'! Reminds me of when xenons were still uncommon and people protested, or gave full beam in protest.

Get your eyes tested!
LED-type lights are not angled away from on-coming vehicles in the same way as headlights are, so yes, they will be dazzling to on-coming drivers. Their brightness levels are often far brighter than standard sidelights or headlights as they are intended to be noticeable in bright daylight conditions, meaning they could also be blinding in the rear view mirror for drivers ahead of them.

The twxt in a 11 plate red golf on the m11 today suddenly slowed for 70 to 40 and drifted on the hard shoulder. When i over took him he was busy texting with his head down . It was on the 2 lane section so he quickly became a mobile road block as he was drifting between lanes.

The people who have such a high opinion of themselves that they expect everyone to share this opinion and choose to speak unnecessarily loudly in situations like shop queues, restaurants, bars, office etc.

Reminds me of a restaurant experience a good few years ago. The loud asshat in question was a BA pilot, with time on Concorde and 747s. How do I know this? He was so obnoxiously loud and full of his own self-importance that EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the restaurant knew exactly what he did for a living.

And "career laughs". I fking hate wksock sycophants with false laughs.

Whilst not 100% sure on this, I imagine that they would be judging, and tutting, for you not having you fog lights on.

Depending on how thick the fog is, the point at which foglights are turned on, must surely be when visual contact with vehicles in front and behind is lost.
No one can predict how fog will be at any given moment. At one point it may be good enough to see several hundred metres, and a few seconds later down to just a couple of metres.
In thick fog, normal tail lights wont show very far to a following driver until the last second, and if the vehicle in front has slowed to a crawl, or even stopped for any reason, including because the fog has suddenly got very dense, the first thing a following driver will know about it, is most likely when they pile into they back of the car in front.
It really is quite simple, if a driver cannot see the head, or tail lights of the vehicles in front and behind, then turn on the foglights. If they `can' see both the tail lights and head lights of the vehicles in front, turn them off its Its not like moving a little switch on the dashboard is a massive effort, is it? (although for some not over endowed with brain cells it might be)

because he's good at sport, but he's very much not our only sportsperson. He's won it 3 times now. He wasn't even there. There were a good number of really inspirational sporting stories this year and a number of those people won't get another chance. It's more of a question of fairness rather how good murray is. As I've said I do think he's brilliant, but so are others. Public votes eh.

The trouble with Andy Murray and lack of personality is if anyone ever says "back story" someone always brings up the Dunblane massacre.

Also to be fair to the chap he is usually appears win or lose minutes after spending eight to twelve hours hammering the crap out of balls and is probably too knackered to be interviewed. I'm amazed how coherent he is some times.

The parent on a bike with small child also on bike who decided to ride over the Coldhams Lane railway bridge in Cambridge, trailing a stream of traffic behind them, rather than use the nice, entirely safe, entirely segregated, not to mention sodding expensive, cycle path and bridge.
