Apparently hill starting with a hand brake is "impossible" with an automatic.
Well yesterday I became the owner of a Lexus LS400 (1UZ donor in case the Renesis goes Stimpy-ish in my RX8) and it took me about three seconds to work out how to hill start the behemoth.
Stop at a junction as normal and use the hand brake (in the case of the LS the foot operated parking brake). Take your foot off the brake pedal because while the engine is idling there is not enough centrifugal force for the gear to engage.
When the lights start to change or you see a gap etc slowly move the throttle pedal until you feel the gear bite and release the hand/parking brake (the lever to the left of the steering column on the Lexus).
That is how simple doing a hill start using the handbrake is in an automatic. Just as if not easier than a manual.
So the next time you see someone at a set of lights, junction, roundabout or anywhere sat with their foot on the brake pedal manual or automatic give them as much room as possible. They are a liability.

Probably suffering from a severe case of chipped shoulder & desperate to compensate for the fact he was only in the seat of a SEAT. 1. What exactly would happen to you, or your car that would cause your foot to come off the brake? An accident is about the only thing I can of and well, really if that's happening, your foot on the brakes is the least of your concerns.
2. Look elsewhere? Don't focus on the super bright brake lights?

You might wanna rethink that and check your handbook. Leaving an auto in gear with the handbrake on can cause damage and if you drive a dual clutch auto, definitely do not do this! In my dual clutch car if I leave it in drive and put the handbrake on, the car tries to pull forward. If I leave my foot on the brake, the clutch disenages and does not work against the brakes. I believe this is true with most DSG style boxes. Leaving it in D with the handbrake on in a DSG is likely to cause premature clutch wear, much like holding a manual on a hill using the clutch. Also for hill starts, loads of cars have Hill Assist. I stop on a hill and when I take my foot off the brake the car stays still waiting for me to drive off. There's absolutely no need for the handbrake to be applied.
Admittedly I'm in a manual, but I always use my brakes at lights. If you think brake lights are dazzling, then you must have extremely sensitive eyes. I've had my eyes lasered, so lights at night are amplified for me and I still have no problem whatsoever with the car infront having their brake lights on.
And again, you were talking about manual, but your opening statement just says about having your handbrake on and doing a hillstart. Surely I can hillstart just fine if I'm off the brakes and onto the gas? If somebody stops 2cm off my bumper, I'll put the handbrake on incase I roll back. But I'd probably sit on the brakes anyway; if they want to stop to a point where I can't see their front lights in my mirrors, they can get 'blinded.'
