For what other reason are the 'lane closed 800/600/400/200/100 yards signs for? They are saying move over to the left/right lane. Only when the sign 'Use both lanes when queueing' is shown should you make ground along the lane that is closing.rolleyes
I think I'll just follow the advice in the Highway Code. Thanks though. rolleyes

Road capacity ffs

If everyone used it, life would be sooo much easier.

(Unfortunately those with 'little man / knight of the road' syndrome will never 'get it'.

I believe its where our 'Britishness' actually stunts our ability to think.

i see no one on PH stands up to bullys - people just slip away in fear of the retribution of the few!

but the turnover on the forum is high so you don't care if people never come back or even bother to post and leave

so when someone stands up to unwanted behaviour the childish responses come out smile

anyway - still chuckling at this...

You're a bit strange mate.
not you - how you isolate people who's opinion you don't like and with other members strip them bare and insult everything about them....

you are prob a v nice guy and have a nice car (if your user name is true) but if someone wants to spend 20mins drafting a post then let them eh?

hundreds of people view this thread daily - lets not scare them off

i'm v laid back and the internet does not transfer humour or tongue in cheek at all wink i know i'm not the most diplomatic but i;m just not a fan of people being isolated and picked on for whatever. Where is the guy now? prob can't be arsed to contribute any more??

ah well - sabine is back and she deserves my full attention smile

People who get "scared" of posting. Definitely knobs - sycophants too, in some cases. It doesn't half get weird in here sometimes.

god whats wrong with you all??

people want to contribute without getting abused - thats not sycophantic.... not even close

maybe its a 15 year old kid really interested in cars or journalism, maybe its an 80 year old lady who's husband used to be big into cars and who thinks this may be a way of rekindling that feeling.

ok extremes i know but you can't just lay into people because there is an internet air gap between you and them frown

maybe this is how people act in real life but if so then thats sad

guess its the same sort of people who think Clarkson was in the right for punching someone over some food as he had a right to receive hot food and anyone who didn't deliver should be called out and abused in front of their peers - hmmmm

ah well... at least the behaviour fits in well in this thread

If they wanted you to merge 800 yards earlier they'd have closed the lane 800 yards earlier. How stupid can people be?
Not all drivers will merge at 800yards. The reminder signs are a prompt to hopefully get most vehicles in the live lane before the other lane closure.

The signs are there to tell you the lane is going to end and you need to merge when they do. You should start to slow down and merge in turn when the lanes end. That's how it happens in just about every other civilised country in the world, but oh no, not here... here most people panic, slam on and merge miles before they need to thereby causing the traffic to slow down way too early and then of course we get the stupidest of the stupid who decide to police the closing lane and prevent any traffic passing by being some big 'hero' and driving in the closing lane at the same snail's pace as the remaining lane. ****s the lot of them!

Do HGV's still do this? Nobody argues with them.
What HGV's do is irrelevant, - unless you intend to use their behaviour as an argument for not complying with the rules around merge-in-turn??

People spend a lot of time designing roads, including the EXACT point that they wish two lanes to become one lane. The reasons behind the placement are often to maximise the usage the usage of both lanes to keep another junction behind clear of traffic.

Whatever reason they do have for the EXACT placement of a permanent merger point - IF THEY WANTED PEOPLE TO MERGE IN TURN XYZ METERS SOONER< THEN CLEARLY THAT IS WHERE THEY WOULD HAVE PLACED THE POINT WHERE THE TWO LANES END.

And before you respond true to type - this is about mergers, it is NOT about people using RH only, lanes, LH only lanes or lanes designed for other destinations and then pushing in. That's a totally separate kettle of fish.

Yup, standard "PH Dictionary" definition of knob.
If you've read the whole post instead of the out of context quote then you'll know not only did I openly admit to being a dick, the twunt more than deserved it.

As soon as you use or try to use your vehicle as a weapon you are no longer driving and should be treated as such.

What Hol said. I wouldn't try to be a 'road captain' and police a merge point any more than I'd take a dump in a lay-by or throw bottles of my own piss out of a moving vehicle. HGV drivers are unspeakably foul creatures as a rule.

I'm not suggesting anyone ought to move out of a queue they're already in to overtake the queue, but if you're in a lane that is empty, why merge into a lane full of standing traffic before your own lane runs out. This is what ends up blocking that roundabout behind you. The one that took you ages to get onto and over because idiots entered it without their exit being clear, thereby blocking traffic to/from other directions.

Just fking-well queue if you want to, but don't interfere with the plans of people who actually understand the way merging works. Straddling two lanes makes you instantly into a knob, unless you're doing it to protect an injured person lying in the road or something equally serious. Simply doing it to prevent someone from doing what you perceive to be "pushing in" is pathetic. It's none of your business, and creates conflict when the job of a skilled driver is to prevent and mitigate against conflict with other traffic.

Seriously. If it were cyclists obstructing lanes at merge points to prevent overtaking, torches would be lit and pitchforks ground to sharp points in a mass mobilisation of lynch mob idiots. Those who merge early then block others from merging properly should be boiled in a vat of their own ordure.
