I haven't read all the replies, however am I right in saying you're 20 and you have £2000 budget?

You then list a load of cars including a Honda s2000? You have of course run some insurance quotes on this? Assuming that you can actually find one in one piece for £2000?
Just reading the OP will answer your question!

(£2-5k possibly more)

If you can’t insure a Supra or Imprezza then I doubt you’ll be able to insure an S2000! For me at least they seem utterly ridiculous to insure.

Anyways, some more suggestions.

Honda Civic Type R EP3. Won’t be as fast as your Coupe but they’re a fantastic drive with the screaming VTEC lump.

Mazda 3 MPS. Come with an LSD as standard so good in the bends, plus just a remap will take them to 280-290BHP. Very underrated cars.

Toyota Celica GT4. Fast and unusual.

How bad is the damage on your Coupe? Surely it can’t be terrible if its just been reversed into? Is it not worth fixing this if you like it as much as it sounds you do?

I ran an MR2 Turbo for a year at 20 years old, loved it, lightning quick, easy to modify (if the mood takes you), cheap to maintain.

Also have oyu considered an RS Clio of some kind, great fun to drive - had a 197 and loved it round the twisties.

The Fiat is from what I hear a typically Italian characterful drive, so you'll miss a lot more than just the performance.

I think the only ones that might replace that feel as well as performance are a GTV V6, an MR2 Turbo or maybe the 350Z.

From what I've read about the Brera it will just feel skin deep after the Fiat, the GTV with a Busso v6 is a better replacement I would think, and they aren't particularly known to be horribly unreliable.

Some justification to some of my ideas. I put 2-5k so people didn't just aim for 5k. I would spend it if the car was great (gt4, s2k, 3000gt) but I would rather spend less if I can have just as much fun. I am no snob, to me age, badge and exterior condition mean very little as long as it does what it is supposed to mechanically, the rest are bonuses.

Unfortunately the bump has caused masses of damage, folding the boot, ruining the structure such as lock alignment, bent the rear quarter panel on the passenger side, trapping my spare wheel by folding the tyre well over the tyre. Made a right bang, sounded awful and looks it too. I have managed to make it look acceptable and keep driving it for now but I have been quotes around £2000 for the repair, I would rather spend that elsewhere. That's also with second hand parts, fiat want £800 for the bumper and boot new!!!

This is my issue, I don't want to buy a ropey example of anything but 5k is decent enough for 80% of those cars and a little risk for some.

You'll be fine. At 20 I went from a 290-300bhp Celica GT4 to a 65 bhp mini and I thought the same as you but power doesn't equal fun.

Get an MX-5 next!

Hey guys just a quick update:

I have been looking at the cars suggested and really fancy an MR2. I have found a few issues with them, most have been modified beyond recognition with daft boost gauges and the like, or the standard ones hold their value like mad! I really like the look of this http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/t... and would like an opinion (or a few) on this car. Anybody know if this will be a beast to work on, although from the advert I would say everything is sweet as a nut. It is a real shame it is 170 miles away from me, but if it all works out I would be more than happy to go that way to buy what seems to be a great car at an absolute bargain price!!! Insurance is only £1100 for the year which for an import doesn't seem too bad and is only a few hundred more than the coupe would have been.

You have not peaked yet as normally there is the 2 year post licence crash that puts the driving skills in perspective...

Sorry, don't mean to be rude or patronising as I don't really know you but those are the statistics... I learnt myself.

Whatever you decide enjoy, the MR2 certainly is a drivers car.

Just messaged me saying it's already sold, gutted isn't the word. Ah well the search continues, although one sorted like that will probably show up the day after I buy one. I'm 99% sure I would have seen it and bought it at the weekend, some lucky bugger got a brilliant deal there.

S3 8P - 225 facelift model that has been remapp'd and some extras will get on for 270bhp, quattro is nice off the lights and Audi reliability.

I've had mine for 2.5 years and it's cost me nothing to run. Except for the tt that scraped the bodywork last week. Price of living in London.
The S3 8P never had 225hp. The facelift S3 8L had 225hp, such as mine. In the two and half years I've owned mine I've spent circa £2k on it in general maintenance +remap, +polybushing it, +updated clutch, +braided brake lines +misc costs.

As far as Audi reliability, mine has always started, stopped and taken daily abuse, however it has had some annoying faults such as the rear wiper wash pipe corroding and causing water to ingress into the boot lock solenoid. The interior alarm sensor switch has fallen to bits.

When buying a 13+ year old S3 go in with eyes open. Same as most other cars of its generation.

I'm chopping it in soon and will most likely never see the money I've put into making it a better car back. That is the problem with VAG cars, bar a select few exceptions, they just aren't special, liveable yes, loveable no, not in my opinion.

Fiat Coupe is hardly "peaking too early" is it?

Haha very true, solid build. However after he told me how much he had to spend on a new clutxh and a few other bits left me thinking I don't fancy a performance BMW anytime soon haha. I'll see what cars come up, but I really have taken a fancy to the mr2, but it's a right pain in the ass trying to figure out N/A or turbo, stock or modded, colour, revision (there was 5....5!!!) and throwaway price at 1k or a good example to keep and sell for similar at £2-4k. The joys of not wanting a boring car.

Considering I bought a reliable 250bhp 155mph 0-60 sub 6 seconds decent handling car for less than £2000 I would say so at 20. What else can that budget get me that comes close, along with nice leather seats, AC, sunroof and style (very marmite I know). I'm not saying I've peaked for life, but short term I'm not far off considering I have a very average job and don't have the ability to save a great deal. I came on here hoping people could suggest similar cars but in all honesty none match the style and power, but many trump the fiat in handling. I fancy the mr2 as it is a totally different car, albeit not as good looking nor unique to me.

If you haven't been in a fiat coupe 20vt I suggest you do. The 225 bhp feels like a lot more than what it is in reality. I am also not basing this off my mates corsa and Clio in the Maccys carpark. I have been lucky enough to be the passenger in a few fast cars (focus rs, m3 e46, lancer evo, cupra r, k1) but for the cash it's fantastic power.

Turbo Rev 3 onwards if you can get one mate, has better brakes for a start and more power than the Rev 1 or 2. The N/A isn't a bad car by any means, but the turbo doesn't half put a smile on your face, especially as its sat just behind your head (relatively speaking) so it's perfect for wasting fuel listening to it spool...

I had a T-bar rev 2, the seals can be a nightmare if not looked after, although it's no effort to do, and taking the panels out is a 5 second job so can easily be done at a set of lights etc if the weather turns and you no longer want the wind in your hair.

Love these things, but got no room at home to get one!
