Fanatastic stats...built well...positve write up
However, there is something about these all-conquering family hatchbacks that doesn't pass my "look back after parking" test...perhaps simply because it's (they're) so massively derivative of the family from which it were born....
Ergo this ain't special enough....
wheels/exhaust and a subtle decals aren't enough. Pump up the visuals for me please, make it stand apart. When I see one I don't want to be questioning whether it be an S-line, an S, or an RS, a 3 or a 5 door... I want to be left in no doubt about the car's intentions.
So not for me.

I have no idea why a comparison was made between this and the Golf R. The standard S3 is the obvious competitor as being virtually the same price (think the Audi is £500 more) and having the same power and torque figures.

The RS3 would blow the Golf R away, agree that the only realy competitor is the Merc A45 AMG.

What a shame they only build it in the ugly 5 door body.
I find that a big plus point, Barry the Chav hates 5 door cars so he wont be blasting around like a dick raising the profile of the car with plod drawing unwanted attention to them, or your driving along and there is the same car as you with someone with a hoddie on, or worse stretched tyres!! or even worse the ultimate in mong mods a car bra!!!!

They are releasing a 4 door version of the RS3 in the USA so that may come here later on.

If the peak power is literally available from 5,500rpm to 6,800rpm then there is no reason to rev beyond 5,500rpm in a single gear -> you would get no more acceleration. The only driver to make you go towards the red line is if the ratio spread means that you drop way down in the next gear, which I doubt with a 7-speeder.
Surely you want to stay within the peak power band for as long as possible rather than change gear?

RE the EA888 engine in the golf, peak power is from 5,500rpm until 6,200rpm. So doesn't rev quite as freely as the RS3 but not far short. I find in mine it's well worth ringing out to near the redline, actually quite surprised by the top end power for a 4pot turbo!

The RS3's direct competitor is surely the A45 AMG though, similar power and price?
Ah yes, apologies on that. I'll amend the story now. Certainly a very good four-cyl turbo but the five is another league altogether. Lovely engine. The A45 was mentioned in the story and we'll be sure to compare it soon, I think it will be quite close. We just thought that the Golf would inevitably come up more frequently!

How does the RS3's ride / suspension feedback compare to the A45 AMG?

I'm surprised with the wider 255 tyres up from and the massaged handling it still did not seem that adjustable on the track.

As a day to day proposition it has some really good points though, engine and gearbox for instance.
Does seem strange having the wide tyres on the front you would have thought they could have tried to keep all the same size, just don't take it to a BMW garage for anything as they will end up putting the front tyres on the back smile

We've got the 5-door (not S/RS though!) and it ticks the boxes of practical with being decent looking. I don't think the 3-door is much more attractive either.

Could be worse, could be "sticking it in launch mode at the lights having it fart and splutter" to attract attention.

Another Audi for car buyers who have image and bragging as their top priorities.

I suppose the business model works for them though.
er, no, an audi for drivers who like warp like acceleration, and smiling. bragging is for under 25's and old men who wear things they shouldn't. tbh i never ever get bored of it. more like riding a bike than driving, you can make snap decisions knowing you have ample power to do the next 'thing'. anyone who disagrees should go try one, then buy one, or get a mate with one. alot of folks talking rubbish on here clearly never been in one, let alone drive one

Er, noise too. Surely one of the strong points of this car!

Ringing out the gear drops you into the sweet spot of the next gear as well.

You have driven a car before haven't you? Lol ;-)

I can't get my head around the wider tyres at the front, other than the previous RS3 I can't think of another car that has this?

To me it feels like they've had a go at making it handle, then realised that they can't so do a proper bodge.

Or developed it that way as it works well? Wider track at the front as well so might be the way the geometry works and compromising power and steering too.

i suspect its partly marketing, and partly so they can get buyers to fork out another grand for the 255 upgrade over the stock 235 tyre

the MK1 certainly feels to turn in better on the wider rubber and has a more positive steering on the 255, but it also does not have the dynamic steering that the RS4 got slatted for that this one has.

Doesn't sound too dissimilar on the road to my 1st gen RS3. The engine is worth the extra over the multitude of 4pot turbos out there for sure.
