RE: Audi RS3: Review

i suspect its partly marketing, and partly so they can get buyers to fork out another grand for the 255 upgrade over the stock 235 tyre
the MK1 certainly feels to turn in better on the wider rubber and has a more positive steering on the 255, but it also does not have the dynamic steering that the RS4 got slatted for that this one has.
With the weight bias being over the theoretical 55/45 limit for good balance, the beefier fronts certainly have benefits. MTM did the same with their tuned version of the S2 quattro years ago. the MK1 certainly feels to turn in better on the wider rubber and has a more positive steering on the 255, but it also does not have the dynamic steering that the RS4 got slatted for that this one has.
As a road car, I'm not sure it needs it anyways. Oddly, the TT has always had wider rear rubber to match but the RS3 hasn't.
Audi should just come out with a RR version car with ripped out seats and plastic windows just to shut everyone who complains about Audi's being boring.
Fast Audi's are popular precisely because they are so boring to drive. They aren't cars for track day purists, they are cars for people who want a fast daily driver which won't threaten to kill them at every turn. You can hammer the throttle mid corner in the wet and come out alive without even sharting in your pants. That is what they are about. Every single time a new S/RS comes out people expect Audi to turn back on 30 years of engineering. It's not going to happen.
Audi has never been about raw driving experience and I doubt that's going to change any time soon.

I wonder how much of the extra power over and above the Golf R would actually be usable on public roads? Probably not that much in reality.
So the extra £10k goes mostly on the 5 cylinder soundtrack and the added "prestige" of the Audi badge, which for some would be enough.
Having sat in a Golf R a few weeks ago, I can't say it was that impressive for a £30k car, so perhaps the Audi is the better buy.
I still think the S3 might be the more logical purchase, but I could certainly understand why the RS3 will be in demand.
Not quite a 10k difference - the comparable Golf R 5dr DSG comes in at £32k, plus the RS3 has leather as standard (£1,700 option on the Golf). So the extra £10k goes mostly on the 5 cylinder soundtrack and the added "prestige" of the Audi badge, which for some would be enough.

er, no, an audi for drivers who like warp like acceleration, and smiling. bragging is for under 25's and old men who wear things they shouldn't. tbh i never ever get bored of it. more like riding a bike than driving, you can make snap decisions knowing you have ample power to do the next 'thing'. anyone who disagrees should go try one, then buy one, or get a mate with one. alot of folks talking rubbish on here clearly never been in one, let alone drive one
There is more to life than warp acceleration. Many cars offer more than adequete straight line performance, but traffic light GP's can be the one of the less impressive dynamic traits. But like I said, the business model works for the target customer such as yourself.Ali_T said:
Beg to differ. And they used to be cooler than Aston and Maserati combined...
That was an extremely limited edition homologation model and they didn't make more than a few hundred of those. Not sure it's a fair comparison to a mass market car.A fairer comparison would be the standard Audi Quattro which at the time was very cool but I think it's pushing it to claim that it was anything near driving perfection. I never drove one myself but my dad had a late model one growing up and even he admitted that he had more fun driving my Type-R than he did in the Audi, though he recons his Audi would have spanked it from a standing start.
In any case, even if we agree that it was, that was literally the first and last example you can dig up. That's 30 years ago now. Are people really holding onto 30 year old memories hoping for a "return" from Audi? That boat came and went along with Group B. It's all about selling as many cars as possible and that means solid dependable usable peformance, that's what Audi means now.

Is it wrong to prefer a m135i with LSD?
6cyl inline turbo noise. Rear wheel drive. Real adjustability under throttle. Surely not as good looking thing but behind the wheel surely more satisfying ? How does it compare ?
Definitely not. I would too. In fact, the ~£10k difference could be used to make one hell of a machine. 6cyl inline turbo noise. Rear wheel drive. Real adjustability under throttle. Surely not as good looking thing but behind the wheel surely more satisfying ? How does it compare ?

How does the RS3's ride / suspension feedback compare to the A45 AMG?
A45 is more rewarding when flat out, the damping is quite tough at low speeds but gives it incredible composure at higher speed. It feels better the harder you push where the Audi seems to have a comfort zone around seven tenths. Neither is exactly supple around town but I think the RS3 probably edges it. Comparing the two will of course provide more answers and it should be quite fun too! I suspect the RS3 would be a nicer everyday proposition with the A45 as a more enjoyable car to drive.Matt

The RS6 has gone though - remember him tweeting photos of Audi retrieving it from him.

sad, nobody said there wasn't more to life. nobody mentioned traffic lights but you. target customer? yeah, ones that like to spend decent money on decent cars. not sad small minded individuals who talk alot about alot, but drive 5 cars in their little lives. while you are dreaming, i'm out driving
Haha well said feller. These days pistonheads is like a grown up, geekier, sadder, neckbearded version of Motor Top Trumps where people with little experience battle it out on the internet for who has the most car knowledge. It's pretty sad really.People who aren't so far up their own arses understand that not every car is for everybody, stereotyping people for their car choices is schoolboy behaviour and nothing more.
