What is it with kitting out 4-pot cars regardless of their power with more than 2 exhaust pipes nowadays?

Looks ridiculous.

The VW site only gives the option of a six speed manual? Can anyone confirm if it's manual or DSG in the UK?

The VW configurator is notoriously st. The R estate is DSG only.

10 points for being the one billionth person to say that. Well done.

The configurator is wrong, it is DSG only

We were told DSG-only on the launch for the UK. No manual cars to drive either. If VW says any different we'll let you know.

Cheers!

One day there will be an article about a fast estate the doesn't roll out the cliched "Getaway car...." line.

One day.
Alright, perhaps its hackneyed but it does apply here! I've not used it before (I think) and the Golf would be very good. Focus ST is a bit too shouty, the Leon has slightly less space and is a more distinctive shape, the Octavia has 70 less hp as standard... It is a good combination for one of those cars, even if actual getaway cars are probably seldom used now. Point noted!

Nice car but they're still sticking with the same awful 18" wheels as standard I notice frown

Given that most getaways are done by logging out, these days, it does seem arcane.

Did we get a definitive 'can it tow' answer or just supposition? PH??

More supposition from me, but the hatch has a black shiny plastic rear diffuser thing fitted, and on the configurator it looks like the estate has it too, so I'd say 'no' to towing.

I don't think the Golf works as an estate. I'd much rather have an S3 Sportback.

On BMWs that part is interchangeable with one which has a removable tow bar cover, depending on if you spec a towbar. I had to buy one when I had a towbar retrospectively fitted to mine.

Ah, didn't know that was possible - would be a big ace up the Golf's sleeve if VW could do it.

Towbar not on the configurator whereas it is for the Passat Estate, so regrettably does indeed seem to be a no.

A tempting proposition at the right price.
I like hatches. I like estates based on hatches. I like hatch-hotness with hooves, a tail and a hairy chest!

Given the number of Golf R hatches that have been stolen to perform acts of robbery, I think it's an entirely appropriate comment

Might as well keep the R badges. Nobody knows what they are anyway.
