Did we get a definitive 'can it tow' answer or just supposition? PH??
The German Golf R Variant spec brochure lists the Towing Capacity as Nul, so I'm guessing it can't tow.
What is with the manufacturers.

I know, lets build a big boot version of our hot hatch/fast saloon so it's a practical all rounder for families etc.

Lets not let it tow though. That would make it too practical.

Gah.
Yup. Twonks.
In an act of blatant thread-CPR I can confirm that the Golf R Estate cannot be fitted with a tow bar.

As I've just bought one from a man who bought it to tow before realising. hehe

Thread from the dead!

I can confirm that the exhaust is all booked up on the 7.5, however it still can't tow, hence the bike rack on my roof!

OK, so they are fake tips on the 7, not on the 7.5...

Correct, all 4 pipes are blowing on the 7.5 Estate & for added fun, the valves are also permanent set as open.

While I do (very) occasionally actually tow the bike rack is the main reason for wanting a tow-bar.

Using roof racks is a pain in comparison, especially with 4 bikes (the childrens bikes were in the boot at this point, they still can fit but it's getting tight). I would not buy a "daily" that couldn't tow for that reason. The screen/boot mount ones which are the only alternative are asking for damage.

Actual towing is for the motorbike trailer and given the few times I use it I could get away with a hire van.

I really do find it incredible that for a car format where its whole raison d'être is to be more practical...and it cannot tow.

Sadly, beyond my budget frown

but an aftermarket exhaust may not be in the future...

Important question: Can it tow?

The Focus ST Estate can't and for that reason alone it's off my shortlist for my next car.
That's the main thing I wanted to get out of the review.
I have a 66 plate R Estate that is about to go back. That one can't be fitted with a towbar due to the rear splitter. But I think the newer ones can be.
It shows as a £721 option on the VW configurator.

Not on the R, only the standard estate. Trust me, I tried.

Why this car cannot tow? It is just a iron bar attached at the back.

Sometimes, as in the case of the Focus ST with the central exhaust it isn't physically possible, but in other cases it may be that the manufacturer hasn't had the model tested for towing weight and as such I'm guessing that means you can't legally use it to tow.

It hasn't been type approved for a towbar. Basically, they sell so few it isn't worth VW's time to have it approved for just the UK market. The design would have to be different with all those exhausts and the rear splitter so for the amount they would sell they simply haven't bothered.

Personally, as a second hand buyer, I am delighted it doesn't come with a tow option. DSG gearboxes are fragile and expensive enough without having to worry about what the previous owner has been towing about.

The DSG is the robust gearbox in the R. It isn't the flaky dry clutch one found in smaller cars. They're very reliable and cope with tuning very well.

Interestingly you can spec it with a towbar on the configurator...

Behold!

horrible paint/wheel combo for comedy effect

You can use the configurator to spec electric seats without leather or a three door with keyless, doesn't mean they'll build it...

I'll say it again (and bear in mind I own a mk 7.5 R estate and wanted a towbar): You can not get a factory fitted towbar on an R estate. Configure all you like, they won't build it. Ring a dealer if you don't believe me.

No no, I believe you, I was drawing attention to the fact that the configurator is wrong smile
