They don't that much no, which is why if you bought £1000 car over a £2000, you'd save £200.
Nonsense.I just got some quotes for a hypothetical 17-year-old, in Leeds, driving a 2005 1.3 Fiesta worth £2,000
Quotes:
Ingenie £1810 (black box) £300 vol excess, £450 compulsory
Insure the box £2100 (black box) £1000 vol excess, £300 compulsory
Hastings Direct £2175 (black box) £95 compulsory excess
...
Diamond £7,679.70 (cheapest non-black-box) £500 vol excess, £250 compulsory
Change it to £1,000 car value (no other changes) and:
Ingenie £1901.78 £300 vol excess, £450 compulsory
Insure the box didn't quote
Hastings Direct £2341.26 £95 compulsory excess
Diamond £8,029.50 £500 vol excess, £250 compulsory
Now bear in mind you could knock those quotes down more, but it's very clear that the lower-valued car (otherwise completely identical) is the more expensive to insure.
Apologies for insulting a fellow northerner, but you suck at finding quotes then! Though you are right on the value thing
I got:
17yo, with mum on policy as named driver.
social, domestic and commuting, fully comp.
2005 1.4 fiesta valued at £2000
Kept in drive at night, office car park day. (putting in garage or on road made no difference)
living in chipping norton.
... £988.00 with a black box and £500 excess
... £2,264.16 without a black box and £450 excess

Ignore everyone else. If you are prepared to spend the money buy whichever you want the most. Why wait another year when you can buy what you want now.
Btw passing your test is not guaranteed, so keep that in mind. Best of luck on the day though.
Im gonna stick with either of the VW Jeta or Passat not bothered which tbh "German reliabilty" and thanks Btw passing your test is not guaranteed, so keep that in mind. Best of luck on the day though.

Brembos in my opinon are a advance safety feature and look the part a kit is £800-£1100 not bad
don't get me wrong here... I approve! Just wish I would have been so sensible at 17!
have you done all the usual stuff to reduce premiums as much as possible?
Limit your yearly mileage to 5000 or so, add your mum and gran on. Whatever job you have, remember there can be a few different terms for it. Whilst both legit, some do carry different weightings than others. Also play around with where you leave your car at day and night. The obvious isn't always the best. If you usually leave it in the garage, you may find leaving it on the drive, or even on the main road is a better bet.
Personally I wouldn't touch a black box. even though it's under half the cost. It's daft to think the insurance companies aren't making their money back through these... and given the vast expenditure on personal injury claims, I really doubt it's through them paying out less!

Limited it to 8000 should be enough for my 15 mile round trip comute to work every 3 days a week plus looked at churchill seem to be cheapest without box so best bet for me still puzzled on what VW to get though out of the three i decided upon Jetta Passat Golf all 2006 upwards MMM tricky choice dont wanna go above £5'500 on the lot tbh Just wish I would have been so sensible at 17!

if your going to upgrade your brakes you best check insurance quotes first, when i was going to mod my Leon Cupra i went as far as an idcution kit and a remap and was thinking about a brake upgrade insurance was quoting £850 more to insure with better brakes.
Very good point. When I was doing modifications to my M3, it was the AP Racing brake kit which caused the biggest increase in premium.
Future dubscener? just like them? no reason not to.
If you like them then why not.
They are not that much more expensive. There's so many around that pattern parts should be the same as the equivalent ford/vauxhall, there will also be plenty around in scrappers, just because of numbers, and VAG's insistence on parts bin manufacturing means that lots of bits are used over several cars, so with increased volume comes reduced manufacturing costs.
Consider a Seat Leon or Toledo from the same era too. Same bits, but will be cheaper to buy and maybe insure.
I wouldn't buy a larger car though at 17. You'll just end up driving everywhere and your mates will be having all the fun in the back seat....
