An E30 M3 or Z3M Coupe make ideal trackday cars...However the E30 would need £25k for a standard car in decent condition...You can still get a Z3M coupe for closer to £15k-20k. Handling wise no other saloon car comes close to the E30 on the track.
You will need a baffled sump, though (easy and cheap to do).
I'd bet if you bought an E30 M3 and used it on track you wouldn't/couldn't sell it after 18 months!
If you like the E28 shape you may still be able to find an E28 M5 for £25k ish...and they will never lose any value either.
Thanks perhaps the E30 for occasional use including track would be a good option + they will only keep appreciating. I shall try and find one to go see.You will need a baffled sump, though (easy and cheap to do).

I know what you mean about the rear seats, my lad is only six and fits a treat, useful storage space though otherwise.
Regarding reliability, as long as you buy a good one to begin with, don't skimp on servicing, and use it regularly then it shouldn't be too much of a worry. The AJP V8 is actually quite a robust engine and can be good for up to 100k miles without a rebuild.
The main issue, as you know if you've had a Griff, is chassis rot, so an inspection on ramps prior to purchase is advisable.
Thanks for this I wont rule out a CerberaRegarding reliability, as long as you buy a good one to begin with, don't skimp on servicing, and use it regularly then it shouldn't be too much of a worry. The AJP V8 is actually quite a robust engine and can be good for up to 100k miles without a rebuild.

You seem to have hE some nice cars in your past. Why did you move in from say the e46 M3, E39 M5 or 996 turbo? Would you consider one of your previously owned cars again?
I'd be pretty tempted by a good E46 M3 and fit some coilovers, BBK and CSL airbox.
An E46 M3 is a difficult car to follow, I suppose possible boot floor issues and the very low 1st gear ratio + potential front arch rust from rubbing liners, grumbly diff and fairly poor interior trim quality can put you off. I dot like the dummy wing grills and why put quad exhausts on a straight six. I know I'm being picky, they are good but not great cars in my opinion. Enjoyed reading this thread so far.
I'd be going for a Z4MC myself, but as a different alternative, SLK55? Stonking engine in a small car! Granted the auto box isn't amazing though.
Z4MC Yes they do fit the bill (slightly brave styling if you know what I mean).I'd be going for a Z4MC myself, but as a different alternative, SLK55? Stonking engine in a small car! Granted the auto box isn't amazing though.
SLK not for me, sort of car I would probably enjoy driving more than I'd admit if my wife had one...
Short list now-
Z4MC
Z3MC(perhaps not in budget)
RWD Skyline
Cerbera
T350
Tuscan
Sleeper - Shark nose BM, Supra engined something.
Mercedes in the balance due to cost concerns.
Cars I should try
BMW 135
370zx
GT86
FD RX7
Monaro SC
Have dropped Elise, MR2 and VX220.
I bought a mk3 MR2, buzzy fun, my wife likes it, its a nippy, impractical, under powered, cheap, RWD with LSD but doesn't have enough power to need it.
Bored with it now...
Slight change of direction for a occasional 1/4 mile project car
Key criteria
RWD
LSD
Coupe/2 door
As much power as possible for 1/4 mile use
Road legal
£10k starting budget
Will have to consider LHD
Pre 1992 to avoid catalytic stranglers
Manual preferred but not essential
Medium sized to suit my garage

I bought a Hiace 2.7 auto in jan 2016, it is rwd and a great fit most things van....
Still looking for the right car, budget has grown as Ive just sold a Forester XT, still have a soft spot for Lexus IS300 sport cross although don't do enough regular miles to bother with an auto now.
Ive narrowed the search down to -
A waterproof Caterham SV.
A gull winged S2 Elise.
A Z4MC with a sunroof and larger boot.
A Porsche Cayenne turbo with switchable 2 - 4 wheel drive.
A R34 Skyline that doesn't have a cheap flakey looking interior, again with switchable 2 - 4 wheel drive.
BRZ or GT86 but with good rear lights more bhp and a straight six engine.
Lexus LFA under £25k.
E46 3.8 M5 engined Touring, sunroof, heated memory seats & LSD.
Think I need to build something...
