Evening all,

Just wondering whether anyone has any experience of a scenario like this - say I purchase a bike on eBay that is MOT'd, but untaxed, not showing on askMID as insured and not SORNed. I would buy the insurance before collecting it, however, askMID sometimes takes days to update insurance status - would I be able to tax the bike with it showing as uninsured on askMID?

Taxed my bike at the post office about 15min after I insured it, their system already showed it as insured (though I took a copy of the docs just incase).

Was hoping to do it online as would be collecting on a Sunday afternoon... May have to chance a journey without tax if that's the case (so long as the bike can't be seized if I'm stopped (will take proof of insurance with me anyway)? A fine would be fine (haha)!)

Better still, I could pre-book an MOT for Monday morning... Am I therefore legal to take it "to the MOT centre" on Sunday afternoon in preparation for Monday? (when the test would then be cancelled and tax purchased at the Post Office!)

I believe the system now is that insurance is NOT checked when taxing via the website (but MoT is). Instead the system allows you to tax an uninsured car, so that you can be fined later.

They make more money that way.

There is truth here. But a non-cynic may have worded it differently.

Hard not to be cynical really! Thanks for your help carmadgaz and Cliftonite - will try and re-arrange for PO opening time collection (I'd completely forgotten that the PO did tax!!), but failing that will try online and have the pre-booked MOT "technicality"(?) as a fallback smile

Have a good night!

You'll be able to tax it online or over the phone with the reference number from the New Keeper bit of the V5C.

You can't use the pre-booked MOT "technicality" if it already has an MOT; it only applies if it is MOT-less for obvious reasons.
